Hair Help for first-time Waldorf Doll maker?

Hi there:

I an desperately in need of some help. I posted about a month ago about wanting to buy a Waldorf Doll, and you all convinced me that I could actually make one myself. I have been having a lot of fun spending every weekend working on it. The body is looking great now, and I need to add hair. The instructions for hair that came with the kit did not have the kind of hair that I am looking for. I want shaggy boy hair, for my shaggy boy. Kindof like this:

I have seen some references to knitting or crocheting the hair, but I can't find any online instructions, other than a video that is a little hard to follow because I don't know how to crochet (I can knit, and I am sure I could figure out how to crochet if I need to). Could you give me a link to some printed, detailed instructions?

Hi there,

Based on the pictures you showed, I think you definetly need a crocheted cap.  Then you latch the hair pieces in (which is easy). 

I did not crochet or knit until I made my first doll 2 years ago.  I found the Dancing Rain directions confusing on how to do the crochet cap.  I searched around on YouTube for videos (which while rather quick, if you rewind and play over and over, can help).  Photos just did not show me the movement I needed to see.  When I figured it out, I posted this thread:

The number one thing I think is important to remember is it is covered with hair.  It doesn't have to look perfect (or even that good for that matter.  haha).  You just want something resembling a hat.  I've never crocheted anything else, so all the talk of counting and increasing was too persnickety for me.   Like I said in the thread, I just went around the outside of the circle.  For me it was nice not to have to count (so I could listen to TV or talk while I was working).

Thanks for the reply, Beth. Is it possible to just knit a little hat and attach hair to it? why crochet instead of knitting (I can knit, but I have never crochet'ed).

No I don't believe so.  I don't knit, but my understanding is that knitting is stretchy by default.  You don't want ANY stretch on this cap as it is holding the heavy hair onto the head.  it should be very sturdy and dense.

Oh, right. That makes sense. I guess it would be too stretchy. Guess I'll learn to crochet. Thanks for the help.
