Starting Domperidone after 8 months of EBF?

Anyone used Domperidone in the "later" stages of breastfeeding? Supply has tanked (yep- I am sure, yep- I am working with a LC) & I am wondering if this will be worth a shot at this point? Any success stories? I have read many posts of women who started it during the newborn period (while trying to establish a milk supply). I am specifically wondering about brining back my supply and then maintaining it for an older infant.

Thanks.

I want to.... is that a close enough answer? Just have to get past the challenge of getting some here in Canada while having a family Dr who isn't pro-bfing.

DD is 14 months old today, I am working full time and gone 7:15-5:15 M-F. Then I try to make up for it by nursing from 5:15 – 7 am and I am tired. Exhausted. She does not like BM from a bottle or cup, or formula, or cows or goats milk…just soy milk.  My supply is dropping since I am not nursing during the day and pumping involves me trucking my pump out to the car and going for a quick drive somewhere private and pumping for 20 minutes then driving back and rushing upstairs. I get 30 min for lunch. No, there isn’t anywhere at work for me to pump. Open concept office, very classy executive marble floors and hardwood desks. “Walls” are glass with frosted decorative squares on them for privacy, but anyone can see anything walking by. Bathrooms not an option, 3 stalls common bathroom for the entire floor.

Pumping during lunch is a huge chore and I just haven’t been doing it.

I know on the weekends when she wants to nurse lots, there just isn’t enough to feed her for the day.  And when Mum is home she isn’t so much into the solid foods.

Taking Fenugeek and eating oatmeal and drinking water.

So yep, I have been looking at it too. *sigh*

I know mamas who have never been pregnant use it to nurse their adopted babies, so I would think it would work with an older infant!  You do have to make sure that your body knows more milk is needed too, though, but increased nursing and/or pumping.  Hopefully it will be a positive cycle : more milk = baby more interested in nursing more often = more milk thumb.gif

love2mother - just wondering what exactly tipped you off to your supply dip? My 4 mo. old is EBF and I think my supply is dropping a bit, though I'm not sure. What signs/symptoms did you notice?

Not that late, but I started it at 3.5mos with my first. It helped. Enormously. I was pumping 1 oz/day (yep, that's per 24 hrs), and within 10 days of starting domperidone I was pumping 18oz/day and nursing my babe 3 times/day (long story). I stayed on it until my boy was 19mos and then stopped. I weaned him at 22mos when I was preg with DS2.

I recommended it recently to a friend whose babe is 5 mos. She had the same kind of results. She went from nursing him 5+ times and pumping 6oz while at work and noticing poor weight gain and fewer and fewer wet dipes with the babe to nursing him 5+ times and pumping 20oz while at work and babe is now gaining well and soaking diapers again.

It's worth a try, mama.
