Starting solids and allergies

The latest reccommendations say that starting solids at 4 months is preferable to help prevent allergies (or something along those lines, please forgive me, it was a hectic night :)). Our paed allergist says we should start next month when ds2 is 16 weeks.

what are your thoughts?

It seems to me from reading various articles online, that starting solids about 6 mos is still preferrable (to starting before), but that one shouldn't wait much past 6 mos (for allergy reasons).

In my opinion, breastmilk (or formula) should be the vast majority of their nutrition until 6 mos. Before ds2, I figured that little tastes of food before 6 mos was no big deal. Now I'm not so sure.

If it matters any, ds had little tastes of food starting about 5-5.5 mos, and that's about the time his eczema started. He'd had it on his cheeks in response to dry air before that, but it was about that time he got it other places.
