Resolved: Why am I getting all these unsolicited emails?

Thread Starter

Since the recent round of changes, it seems that every time I post on a thread, I get a barrage of emails from MDC to let me know that other people have posted on the thread.  They are unwanted and irritating.  If I wanted constant updates, I would subscribe to the thread (isn't that the point of subscribing to a thread?)

Can this problem be resolved?  Is there a way to opt out?  If not, I will stop participating on MDC.  A single or occasional email would be one thing, but if I have to stop and think "do I want to post on this thread enough to put up with the junk emails" every time, the answer will be an across-the-board "no".

Hi! I'm very sorry that you're feeling barraged! Yes, you can definitely opt out. Here is the information about the subscription set up: http://www.mothering.com/community/wiki/subscription-tutorial The default seems to be set to auto-subscribe, and I've removed that for your account so the emails should stop now. Please let us know if they do not.

To now manage how you would like to receive email updates, you can follow these steps:

Change Your Default Subscription Email Notification Preferences

When you subscribe to content, if you have verified your email address, you can choose to have email notifications delivered to you.

  1. Navigate to your user profile.  Below your user avatar, you will see the "Edit Subscriptions" button.  Click the button to view your subscriptions management page.
  2. You can also click the "Subscriptions" button in the header and then go to the second tab to edit your subscriptions.
  3. For here, you can set your default subscription preference.  This includes: Automatic, Immediate, Daily Digest, Weekly Digest, Site Only, and Don't Subscribe.
  4. Click the radio button for your desired preference.  Your preference will be automatically saved.

Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks and my apologies on the email volume. I know how overwhelming it can be!

Thank you for your assistance.  Why is the default set to auto-subscribe?  It's not as if it's difficult to subscribe to a thread if you want to... why make that assumption?

green betty, it may indeed be something new. I'm not experiencing the same thing for threads I post to so I can't be sure it is occurring as a rule. We have reported it to our support team to be investigated. :)

It's true for me as well-- I always had my preferences set to no emails except PMs, but now since the change I get a message every morning with the threads I've posted on, telling me which ones are updated.  I'm curious why the default was to opt people in to this.

I talked with the team about this and understand the decision was made to place this as the default setting. An email notification is sent to you if you posted to a thread and a subsequent post by another member was placed. It was to become effective for all new registering members. Unfortunately it "grandmothered" you in so that's why it happened for you as well and we do apologize for that. You can disable this in your account settings if you prefer to not receive the notifications. The reasoning behind it is to encourage participation amongst members.
