desk or table for the computer

I need a better desk or table for my computer.  I have a laptop, and I have just used it wherever, and I work from home and spend a lot of time at the computer.  I need a chair and a desk that is the right height for my arms.  Every desk I try seems perfect for writing but too high for the computer, and over time it is uncomfortable holding your arms up like that to type.  I am not short, I'm 5' 7".  I wind up moving the laptop down and actually using it on my lap, but then your neck gets sore after a bit of that.

Do you have a desk and/or chair that you love?  I wish I had an IKEA nearby that I could go and check out.  I need something that won't take up much space either.

I suggest either getting a cheap table and cutting the legs short, or getting a chair that you can raise up to a comfrtable height. Maybe even an extra cushion on your chair would help?

Thanks!  Cutting the legs shorter on a table is a great idea!  I have seen plans for making a table out of a door, but I don't need something that big.  But I wonder if I could find something else to be the door.

Go to your local lumber yard, and see what they have for scrap pieces of countertop. DH did this in college - he bought a length of countertop for cheap, and built a frame for it.

A 2-drawer filing cabinet might be just the right height to use for one side (and gives you storage space as well). If your spot for the desk is in a corner, you can mount brackets on the side wall to support the other side.

You still might want to find a chair with adjustable height, so you can lower the chair and make the desk the right height for writnig.

I found an old dressing table on Craigslist.  We painted it black and replaced the hardware.  It is great for the laptop.  It doesn't take up as much room as a desk or table and has a little storage for papers, pens, etc.

These are both great ideas, thank you!!  I am on a mission to get my work space at home organized.  I just can't function like this, I need a better space to keep my work organized and the current situation makes my shoulders and back hurt after a short time.  Thank you!

I have an office table that has one adjustable "T" shaped leg on each end.  I moved it down as far as it would go, and it is SO much more comfortable than my old desk was.  We got two of them for free at an office sale.

Ignore all the cords all over the place lol

HAHA!  We're trying to sell our house, and that is for the people coming in for showings.  Especially now that there is snow on the ground and it is perpetually wet outside, I don't want them getting our carpet all dirty.  ;)
