Question about Cribbing and Beds with Twins

Let me preface by saying I'd LOVE to co-sleep, but Daddy likes his space at night and wants the babies in their crib. I am okay with this because it keeps him happy, and he allows me to bring the babies into the bed from time to time if they are fussy, or once they had a mid-night feeding...plus, I nap with them from time to time.

My 3 month old twins do VERY well sleeping together in their crib. I am just starting to think about what is next for us sleep-wise, because we only have the 1 crib for now. Space is limited in their room, and money is limited for us...so I'm wondering if it will be necessary to buy a 2nd crib in the future, or if I can get a twin size mattress and move directly from crib-sharing for them to putting at least one on a twin mattress on the floor.

I feel like if we have a mattress on the floor, then I can go hop in bed with one of my girls and co-sleep whenever I want to, or when they want me to. ;-) I can even alternate nights with one girl in bed and one in the crib. My only concern is that once they are crawling/walking, there will be no keeping them in the bed.

Haven't discussed this with my doctor, not sure if I want to, and just wondering what other people's opinions are. It just doesn't make sense for me to buy another piece of expensive furniture plus a crib mattress if it will only be used a few months.

HELP! What would you do in this situation??

I was in your position-- with one crib, and twins. I wish I'd had the second crib. I would totally have gotten a lot of use out of it, and it would have saved us so many headaches.

I coslept with one twin for ten months, and the other for 12 months, and then moved them to their own beds. DD2 got the crib, and DS got the twin mattress. It was a disaster-- he was fine with it at first, but then there was no keeping him in it, and we had so many awful nights where he was up constantly. I finally put him in a pack-and-play at 16 months, and that only worked for a few days before he worked out how to tip it over so he could crawl out.

A crib lasts a long time-- DD2 used hers until she was 3. In your situation, I would go for the crib, honestly.

We just bought 2 of these.  Not a bad price at all for a crib.  http://www.babyage.com/nursery-and-furniture/saf-crib-by-angel-line-597.htm

I'd do a twin mattress on the floor together in a bare-bones room so that if they wake up and crawl they can get in no trouble :)
