I want to become a midwife in NC ! ADVICE PLEASE???

Thread Starter

I have always dreamed of becoming a midwife since I was about 12yrs old. Now that I am of age I am in to college (this is my second yr) and I've realized that going the route of a CNM is just not for me even though I know it's well recognized in NC. I want to become a CPM or DEM, so become hands on and do what I love right away and not have to go through nursing school and then midwifery. If you have any information and steps to take please help me!!!

Thank You for your time

The deal is that a direct-entry midwife can get a license but it will not be recognized by the state of NC.  It is recognized in all of our neighboring states.  But hopefully that will change soon and direct-entry midwives' licenses will be recognized here!

You can become a CPM, the national credential issued by the North American Registry of Midwives, and then you can get licensed in Virginia but there is no licensure for DEMs or CPMs in the state of North Carolina. NC does not recognize the CPM credential.

Look at some online schools and see what you think is the best fit for you. Check out the boards at Midwifery Today and see what you think about the various didactic options.

I have heard from a CPM in VA, though, that if you get certified in VA and are proscecuted for attending a birth in NC it's a felony in VA. Just something you might want to check into.

That's interesting, I've never heard that. Although, it doesn't seem likely that VA could prosecute for an infraction committed in another state.
