Your help to make this idea work!

I have a clay handprint of DS' sitting around, and I thought, wouldn't it be nice to make a set of coasters with hand and feet prints as holiday gifts?

Obviously, one would need clay for the print -- I've never actually purchased the clay myself, any tips on which one to buy?

Then, paint the clay.

Next, I am envisioning there being some kind of clear surface above it to make a straight surface upon which to place a drink cup. I guess you could put the clay piece in a tin or something the right shape and size, and then is there any kind of liquid glue or something that would harden and stay clear? Like would polyurethane work?? 

Finally, put felt on the bottom.

Does this sound like something doable? Any other thoughts on how to make it work?

What about buying premade tiles and doing a handprint?  Then, you would need to topcoat it with something that would seal it and put felt on the bottom, even just little circle stick ons like they make for the bottom of furniture.  I know pottery supply places sell bisque fired tiles for people to decorate and high fire but maybe you can just do a handprint in acrylic paint and top coat it with clear.  

Or what about prints on wood disks?  I'm seeing 4" round disks that are 1/8" think online.  Is that too thin?  I think I have laquered handpainted coasters that aren't thicker.  I suspect they are cardboard, though.
