I am double bummed today about finances. First of all, I had an interview yesterday for an afterschool program- of which I am very over-qualified for with a Masters in Education degree. They interview went well, even though she only asked me what my hobbies were, and they had 4 openings but I didn't get the job! Second of all, we are selling our house that we can't afford anymore and getting an apartment until we can relocate to a cheaper city. I just noticed on the rental app that there are suggested income guidelines and for a 2 bedroom it is $40k!! I wish! Anyway, thanks for letting me vent.

*hugs* Sometimes these interviewers have already chosen the successful applicants before the interviews - they just have to follow the correct protocol and interview others too - so do not take it too personally. Networking may help - I know someone who got their dream job through talking to someone in a laundromat!!
Wow that is cool!

Yes I thought about it and figured they probably were hiring someone they knew. It was a pretty sweet gig- $12/hour and only a few hours a day. They didn't require any kind of qualifications either so they probably hired a family member or friend. That is what I am telling myself at least!

A friend and I dubed these unterview after she had interviewed for four or five different jobs that all went to someone that already worked there. I think they do them in case the pre-picked person doesn't take the job.
If it's through any type of government entity, they're required to take applications and do interviews. My husband has to sign a form saying that he's not interviewing with a candidate in mind, which has always been true for him, but he knows there are others on his interview team who do have someone in mind and lobby hard for that person. If it's just one person doing the interviews, then you really have no chance if you're not the already-anointed candidate.

To be honest they may have been concerned that with an M.Ed you are overqualified and would not stay long. I run a community center and one of the programs we have is an afterschool program and I recently had several openings. I had a fair amount of candidates that had masters degrees who I thought would have brought a lot to the table but at the same time I really needed to hire folks who could commit to staying the whole school year. In the end I hired 2 candidates with some college and one who is in grad school. So far one person I had to let go but the other two are great. Try not to be bummed in the end they probably had a lot of good candidates and it was hard to choose, stay positive!
I know it's hard, but try not to take it personally. I was shocked after being involved in some interviews at work. It so random! people are chose/not chosen for interviews based on arbitrary judgments on resume format or fonts or what have you. Often the interview process was less about who was most qualified, but who would 'fit in' the best in the work place. In other words, who seemed cooler. I've seen candidates disqualified because someone felt that they look 'squirrly' whatever that means. A lot of it has very little to do with the actual candidate.
