Breakthroughs in Causes of Autism....

Sorry, I don't know if this is already up but I saw this article.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mark-hyman/autism-research-discovery_b_794967.html

Quote:
The Journal of the American Medical Association by researchers from the University of California, Davis called "Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Autism" (i) discovered a profound and serious biological underpinning of autism -- an acquired loss of the ability to produce energy in the cells, damage to mitochondria (the energy factories in your cells), and an increase in oxidative stress (the same chemical reaction that causes cars to rust, apples to turn brown, fat to become rancid, and skin to wrinkle). These disturbances in energy metabolism were not due to genetic mutations, which is often seen in mitochondrial problems, but a condition the children studied acquired in utero or after birth.

Go to the link for more about what can cause Mitochondrial Dsyfunction---I don't want to go over my quote allotment.

I used to hang out in this forum a lot (I do miss it)  but there used to be a lot of discussions about the link to mitochondrial dysfunctions and where vaxes are in that mix.  As I recall Fevers were part of the problem.

It's unfortunate, although not unexpected, that Hyman (and HuffPo) would spend one paragraph of the article breezing over the actual exploratory study and the rest spinning unwarranted extrapolations and marketing his own "Ultra" brand remedies.

[ETA.--Just to be perfectly clear, I take Hyman's article to be nothing more than a ghoulish attempt implicitly to run Hannah Poling up the flagpole for personal gain.]

Um, ick???

My son is one of those spectrum kids with underlying mitochondrial dysfunction. He inherited it from me. I'm not sure how this person decided a mitochondrial DNA mutation (that's what causes mitochondrial issues....and yes, they affect the entire body because every cell except red blood cells have mitochondrial "factories" as the basis of their energy systems) is not due to genetics. I'm really confused but his ascertations turn me off to the extent that I'm not reading it again let alone trying to figure it out.

I can't fathom how he's drawing the conclusions he's drawing and ascertations he's making.

But yes mitochondrial issues affect possibly up to 25% of kids on the spectrum and for those kids addressing the metabolics will often help them both feel and function better. You don't cure DNA though.

Ick.
