I like this blog, and the newest post is very on-topic for this forum.  It wasn't just Weston Price working on (and apparently succeeding at) healing cavities.  Stephan's got a link to the original publication though he summarizes it too--sounds complementary but not identical to Price.  The blog has other posts discussing dental issues, including alignment issues, for anyone willing to search a bit through the older stuff.

All I can say is WOW!! I am so interested in the article, and Iam totally stopping my daily bowl of oatmeal even though it is soaked.  For that matter, I am cutting out grains, and am only going to have them on the weekend, as my dh will go crazy without them.  (am perhaps me)

I am going to experiment on myself as I have a cavity that needs healing...

Wait! You're stopping SOAKED oatmeal?

I read the blog and associated things a few days ago, and chose to put my head back in the sand with respect to oatmeal. DS LOVES oatmeal. Eats it every morning and even asked for it for dinner last night. It was my goal to move toward soaked steel oats over the holiday break.

I did start to mix it with quinoa flakes. Can't do too many because they have a slightly bitter taste.

The reason I sopped is that oats are one of the only grains that don't break down phytic acid even when soaked in an acid medium for 24 hours.  More special attention is needed.

I havent read it all but it talks about oats as why they would be a problem with mineral absorption. 

This study is making me even more dilligent about my Vit D supplmentation.  I got lots of sun, took lots of Vit D and got tested.  My #s were very low and and that may explain why I still got new cavities recently. 

I am now trying to figure out how much D was given to the children in the study?

As an aside... if the only issue with the oats is the phytic acid (vs an intolerance or x-con with wheat and a wheat intolerance), you can add ground buckwheat to oats during the soak, it's high in phytase.  If you could make the flavor okay, you may also be able to soak oats (with or without ground buckwheat) a la Stephan Guyenet's brown rice method, keeping some of the soak water as a bacterial inoculant for future batches, basically it's a method of quick fermenting.

I've been doing this with beans but I cook them with flavorings that cover the sour flavor that sometimes I just don't want--and oats would be harder for that.

I can't speak to whether just being grain free would be better, grains seem to cause different types and intensities of problems in so many people, figuring it out seems very individualized (and I haven't done the grain-free thing yet, not sure I ever will actually, so I'm definitely not one to give advice).

Yeah, I'm not sure I could ever figure out whether phytic acid were a major issue for us. We are already wheat/gluten-free. We eat tons of beans (source of phytic acid). DS doesn't do any nuts, and I have just added sunflower butter recently to my diet.

Would buckwheat flour work?

I think phytic acid's just a dial that turns up or down the minerals you get from your food (specifically consumed in that timeframe I mean), so depending on your specific mineral needs, maybe it doesn't matter much, or maybe it does.  I think cutting out the foods we're intolerant of was a bigger deal to our health than soaking/fermenting grains/legumes/nuts.  I try to soak and/or ferment, it's hit or miss, but I think it's a bit more marginal in its effect. 

I've read of buckwheat flour being used, if it's specifically for the phytase then do a bit of reading on whether it matters when it was ground.  It was Amanda Rose's depression articles that clued me in to buckwheat (which I never actually did because I wasn't sure oats were ok for us anyway, so I didn't get all the details), but it's online, you should be able to google.  And she had references at the bottom of her pages.

This is kind of the conclusion I drew for DS and myself. Although I still play around with the ferments once in a while (mainly by tossing a cucumber into a jar of leftover pickle juice from some home-fermented pickles I bought at a farmer's market last summer), and I *think* about how I should soak grains or do something else TF-ish. I *am* slightly concerned about the effects of phytic acid in relation to calcium, because that is one mineral I suspect I'm low in.

Yes intolerancs do play a major part.  We soaked EVERYTHING and consumed loads of minerals and k2, a, ,and some D and still dd got cavities.  Wen we cut out the allergens, the cavities stopped.   But that is not the case for me as I  still continue to get decay.
