gunk in crotch buckle

my DD Britax Decathlan crotch buckle has some food or drink residue in it.  it's really bad and i didn't realize her seat wasn't fully buckling until i pulled her out one day and one clip was already out.  i'm doing a super duper check each time i put her in now.  can i clean it out with water or do i need to purchase a new one?  is it safe to run water through the buckle itself while not getting the strap wet?

maybe try a pipe cleaner.. with water on it, or some vinegar

In this case, toothpicks (or skewers) are a girl's best friend!  Rubbing alcohol helps break up the gunk, too.

Check your owner's manual; I know several brands recommend soaking the buckle in warm water to de-gunk it.

Do NOT use vinegar!  I've heard this recomended more than once around here, and it is not safe!  Vinegar is an acid, so if it gets on the strap, thats not a good thing.   A small amount of water and mild soap or baby wipes are the only things you can use.  And always check your manual (there is usually a section on "how to clean your carseat" for more instructions.

Again, nothing but mild soap, baby wipes, water are allowed.
