Holiday food - Page 2

When I was a kid, Xmas Eve was either chili or Texas style enchiladas. Unfortunately, that stopped when i was still quite young.

But Xmas breakfast has always been steak & eggs, biscuits & gravy. And thats one tradition i have kept almost every year (when i could afford it).

Last year, nana did fondue for Xmas, but this year we're doing an International holiday, which is going to be fun.

Lefse!  That's my favorite holiday treat that I only make once a year.  It freezes well so I make dozens before Thanksgiving and have it throughout the season.  However for dinner on Christmas Eve it is always oyster stew with the extended family.  With just the three of us it's a cheese plate, fruit and cookies.

I forgot to mention another treat I make - rolo pretzels - preheat oven to 200 and lay minipretzels close together on parchment paper on lipped cookie sheet.  Balance a rolo (unwrapped obviously) on each pretzel.  Warm in oven 'til soft.  Remove.  Press down lightly when you remove from oven.  OR, press down with a pecan while still warm (gently) - I've used cashews too.

Oh YUM!  And thanks for the PM!

Wow! Getting some graet Christmas Eve ideas here! I think we might do Tourtiere again which we did 2 years ago.

For the season I do:

Homemade Christmas cake - fruit cake with lots of brandy, iced with marzipan and royal icing

cookies - this year gingerbread, some year sugar cookies, always iced :)

DH's family like to do Stollen, so we might do that this year

Shortbread

Single Malt Scotch ;)

For Christmas day - it's a fusion of what a grew up ith in Australia and DH's family:

Turkey

stuffing

roasted veggies - potatoes, carrots, beets, pumpkin

some sort of green veg

Christmas pudding with brandy butter

Our kids are still young so we don't yet have a morning of tradition but I should think about it. We have our meal at around 2pm, so we don't need a big breakfast. Maybe cinnamon rolls or something else which can be prepared the night before.

Mom is an italian so there is always a big bowl of pasta with tons of olive oil and garlic, and a few bits of stewed tomato on top.  Lots of parm cheese.  MMMMMMM.  It's funny for guests to see on the table with the turkey/ham/roast, but it always gets eaten, and if there are leftovers it's a pasta fritatta the next night with a salad.  Also baccala-  dried salted codfish with olive oil and garlic served on crackers and crostini for the appetizer.
