Humidifier - which kind to get?

I remember reading here, that warm air isn't the best, and a cool air humidifier is better. What is better - ulstrasonic, or plain cool air? My hous is pretty dry, and with the massive amounts of snow we have now in MTL, it itsn't an option to leave windows open too much.
