when to sign up for a baby registry?

Just curious when everyone does this type of thing? I didn't do one for ds, but will with this one since i have a lot of things already and only need more specific items. Baby shower is the first week of March, i'm due the 3rd week of April, I was thinking of going sometimes after new years and registering.

You probably don't *need* to register until two weeks before the shower. However, lets not fool ourselves. Signing up for registries is like window shopping on crack ;) Everyone loves to do it! You can also go back and add or change things closer to the date if you like. I would think whenever is convenient is a good time!

yeah i did think that january was even a bit early, but my cousin who is due a bit after me, like almost 4 weeks and who will be having the baby shower the same time as me has already done her registries, which i thought was a little early, but like you said, it is fun to window shop, I wasn't even considering going until after the holidays, but my cousin already registering got me wondering. I just went to a shower last month and I was the first person to purchase off the registry, the week before the shower, so i know most people do wait until the last week or two to actually purchase from one. I guess i will just stick with my plan of sometime after the new year.

signing up is a nice way to start slow and make sure what is on there is what you want. you dont have to tell folks about it till it closer to being done.

we also use ours for stuff that we dont really expect folks to buy but that we will later after the birth and at BRU we then get 10% off on.  So for us it is about orginizing thoughts and plans as much or more than it is anything else since we have no shower to plan forgreensad.gif

We're not due until early April (EDD April 2), and we already started building our registry!  None of our family lives in the same city as us and several have asked if we have one.  We're using an online registry with a mixture of gifts they can buy and ship to us online or pick up at a local store.  This will also allow our mother's to spread the respective word about the registry as people ask.

While I know it's early, I'm finding this whole process of determining what stuff we'll need for a human being who doesn't exist yet quite challenging.  We don't want to accumulate a whole lot of crap, but it's so hard to determine what you'll really need.  We're also trying to be very thoughtful and intentional about asking for things for the baby, but also for things that will help the family as a whole (ie, meal preparation and house cleaning).  It's getting there, but it's a slow haul.  We're planning on having a baby celebration with our friends who live in the city in early February.

I'd do it as early as I felt like!  Once you've signed up for the registry you are on the stores mailing list and many of the bigger places will start sending out coupons.  You don't have to tell anyone else you've registered until much later, and can always go back and tweak your registry for the time you think others may start looking.

I'm not due till June/July and when I have some free time to browse the internet I'm going to open a registry!  Plus it will help me remember which items we still need for this second kiddo.
