newborn stash - what do i need?

i'm due in a month! and so excited. i'm sure it has been posted before, but could someone let me know what i'll need for a starter stash? i'll probably do CDing from the time she reaches around 8-9 lbs (she's expected to be close to that at birth) so i don't need super tiny, just little.

my sister is giving me at least a dozen little fitted diapers, and i will be purchasing prefolds cause i need to save cash. how many infant-size prefolds and fitted diapers, total, will i need to start?

i have a couple Snappis and need to know how many wraps to get.

we hope to do laundry every other day, not every day.

thanks!

I use 24 prefolds and maybe 10 covers. I think I started with 6 covers but newborns can be messy winky.gif

Congratulations on your new baby!

wow, that's a lot more covers than i expected - good thing i asked! i have 2 and another 2 on the way, but it looks like i'll be buying at least a couple more. anybody use the Thirsties Duo wrap? i thought it might be a good investment given that the sizing is a bit more flexible. the other ones i have are Bummis. or i could buy a box of Econobum which has 3 covers, but i'm not sure how well they'd fit a true newborn, the one-size wraps i've seen look like they need at least a 10 lb kid before they'll fit.

input appreciated :)

I would do 24 prefolds and about 8 or so covers. My latest was 8 1/2 pounds at birth and we are still using the orange edged GMD prefolds, which I absolutely love. The yellow edged ones fit her too, but I have to fold them down a bit still.

The Thirsties Duo wrap covers are really nice. I didn't think I'd like them, but at the last minute (I think a week before she was born), I ordered one because I kept reading how great they were with newborns. They really are nice. They fit from the beginning, whereas the Thirsties size XS (which I love maybe more than the Duos) fit after the umbilical cord fell off (the rise, at least on dd, was just a bit too close to the belly button to me).

I also love the orange edged prefolds inside NB Prorap covers - there's nothing fancy about them, but the prefolds fit in them perfectly, and they came in under the belly button perfectly. They would be too small with the yellow edged prefolds, or a regular infant prefold, but with the newborn prefolds, they are great.

ETA: The 2 dozen prefolds would be enough with some fitteds thrown in there. If you want to end up doing only prefolds, and are washing every other day, I'd probably do 30-36 prefolds just to make sure you have enough for changes while you are washing a load of diapers. I only have 1 dozen of the orange edge (wasn't sure if I'd use them much) but I have 9 fitteds that I use also, and I wash every day (mostly because I'm doing laundry every day and with the other boys, I realized I didn't like my diapers sitting around too long between washes).

wow, my sister just sent me the stash - there are 20 fitted dipes that will fit a smaller baby! i remember giving them to her, they were handmade by the Hutterites nearby, and i used a few (couldn't afford to wash them - how pathetic is it that disposables were cheaper?) but i forgot how many there had been :) i'll need to top it up with a few prefolds too, but not many from the looks of it. there were some prefolds in there too but they're definitely not newborn size, may not even be infant size.. might be "premium" size. not sure what brand. they obviously haven't been used much because they haven't even quilted yet - she probably took one look at them and decided they'd be way too big for her wee boy. i'm prepping them tonight as well as stripping the fitteds (she used detergents with enzymes and brighteners, and then a separate brightener too!) so maybe they'll shrink up similar to my infant prefolds. if not, i'll keep them for later.

there's also a whole bunch of pocket dipes - they look handmade too. flannel lining. the inserts she had were polar fleece - not particularly absorbant! i'll need some inserts. but these will fit later (6 months i'd estimate) so no hurry on that :)
