It definitely makes me feel better. We don't get as much sun time as we should, because Cecilia and I are both extremely fair-skinned. Living in the desert, the sun is always strong, and I burn literally in 10 minutes of outdoors time. I don't want to take the chance that Cecilia might have the same experience.

Those times sound about right for the Summertime, with mostly exposed (nearly naked) skin, but not enough for Winter time. The more I read the more it's apparent that the UVB rays necessary to make vit D don't even really reach us in the Winter, when the sun is just too far away.....

Bummer!

By the way, I believe fortified cow's milk has 100 IUs on Vit D per 8 ounces. Measly.

Does that mean faster D production too? After reading this, I think I will look into some quality supplements for the kids. How much is put in fortified milk?

As for getting vitamin D through windows, here are a few sources:

We supplement with vit D. Currently I take between 5000-10,000 IU per day. My levels were just tested and I'm at a 75, which is much better than my 25 of a couple years ago. I supplement year round. DD1 4 yo takes 1000-2000 IU per day. DD2 9 months is not given any, but gets it through my milk, although I may start giving her some extra a couple times a week. DD1 takes the carlson brand drops and I am taking 2 different capsules that are fish derived, per my natropath. I definitely think there are many health benefits, although many of those are being discounted now, probably has to do with the drug companies. I get the newsletter from the vitamin D council, I find that sorta thing interesting.
