I could use some quick help with IEP stuff

My daughter is almost 5, and will be getting occupational therapy through the school district starting in January. Tomorrow (Monday) afternoon I'm meeting with the special needs people to sign an IEP for her, and it occurred to me that while the IEP covers her areas of trouble (SPD), I might also be able to insert wording to cover gifted issues.  We recently had her IQ tested (WPPSI-III) and provided a copy of the results to the special needs people on the day of her special needs evaluation, since I thought the summary of her behavior during the test was highly reflective of the difficulties she has in the classroom.

I'd like to have some sort of wording inserted into the IEP that involves making sure she's provided material appropriate to her ability.  If your child has an IEP that includes accomadation for giftedness, can you suggest some wording?  I suspect the district will resist the idea, but the worst they can say is no and I'd like to be prepared in case they say 'yes' instead. :)

Our state does not do Gifted IEPs.

Look here for info on WA regulations:

It looks like WA has gifted IEPs, but does not mandate programming?! Dont know how that works.

If they will place in accommodations for gifted below is a link that has suggested accommodations by area of strength:

Good Luck!

Yes -- the law is pretty half-hearted. Our district actually has a gifted program that sounds decent, but it doesn't start until first grade and kids have to pass the CogAT and some panel recommendation.  DD is in preschool and will enter K next year, so she's 1.5 years away from potential gifted programming.  Assuming it's there when she gets there, since apparently the state is talking about eliminating all funding for gifted programs. (Not that the funding is enormous right now or anything.)

I'm afraid that list might be too specific...

I hope it all goes well. My DD got OT & PT last year through the schools on an IEP-- -she also, will not go to K until next Fall (she turned 5 this fall and missed the cut-off date...no exceptions).

The state we were in and the state we are in---no gifted IEPs. There was only a brief mention of her 'academic' advancedment in the IEP, but there were certainly no accommodations.

We were lucky and her PreK teacher last year had her and her twin in a different reading/math group. They were able to advance and work on appropriate skills in the correct social setting. LOVED IT. She did it because she was an awesome teacher, not because she had to.

This year---we are not so lucky. She has a good teacher, but she does not really differentiate much at all.

Next Fall, the district starts gifted pull out in 1st grade with mid year K testing.

I'm not even sure that's possible or appropriate to quickly write in something to address gifted issues.. I'm almost to the end of the GIEP process w/ my 6yo and it's as comprehensive of a process as a traditional IEP. If you don't have accurate data about her PLEP, then I'm not sure how they can go on IQ score alone. Do you have feedback (you said you had some behavioral stuff) from her teachers or other observations. Do you have any kind of separate reading or math assessments? I'm guessing not because of her age.

You might be able to put in things like when x demonstrates mastery of ________, she will be allowed to participate in in-class enrichment, free reading, etc?? I'm not quite sure what you're going for. Without knowing where she is academically, it's hard to write a measurable goal, yk?
