Natural Antibiotic Treatment?

Thread Starter

Okay, here's the situation.  I've got what can only be an infection in my mouth; the gum on one side is swollen, and it has now progressed (over the past 2 days, little less) to under my tongue as well.  Normally, with something like this, I'd immediately head to the clinic and get amoxicillin or something.  The problem is that I'd need at least $85 to be seen, since there are apparently no more "free clinics" in my area.  I do NOT have money to get seen by anyone, let alone pay for a prescription without insurance.

So my question is this: is there anything I can use for natural antibiotic treatment, either ingested or topical (remember this is inside my mouth)?  Any suggestions are appreciated, ladies, and thanks in advance :)

Well, P73 oregano oil is a natural antibiotic. But I'd be worried about the mouth as anything in the head can spread to areas within the head (ie brain). If whatever I tried didn't help within 48 hours or I started feeling worse I'd go in. Do you have any fever? Any tooth issues? An idea might be to see if there is a low or reduced cost dental clinic or school in your area.

Garlic is another option. I'd do the P73 though in this case though based on my experience with my son. I think there are extra or physician strength P73 oregano oils. Don't use another brand though as this type has harmful substances removed. You want the P73.

Whatever you take use a probiotics 3-6 hours after every dose. That can protect from the antibiotic effects and could also help healing.

I would be rinsing with either a salt water solution or hydrogen peroxide solution every hour or so and in between I would be spraying silver on it. You could also take the silver systemically or even grapefruit seed extract, but I would definitely be rinsing w/something. Depending on how severe, I would give it a day or two and then if no improvement or worse, scrape together the money and head in to be evaluated by a dentist or some sort of health care provider.

So sorry you're going through this... Hope you're well soon!

eta... And take lots of vit c as I have read that it is very good for keeping gums healthy.

hello! i'm looking for info on natural topical antibiotics. my 8 mo dd was scratched by a doggie on her face, near her eye. over the phone, the doctor said to put some antiobiotic such as neosporin on the wound. i can't leave the house to go get neosporin, so am trying to find out what i have in the house that i can use. prefer to use natural anyway.

you mentioned garlic - could i just apply some crushed garlic or a little piece of garlic to the wound? should i eat some garlic to pass it on through bm?

if i'm able to get some oregano oil tomorrow, could i use it topically on dd?

thanks for any info you can share!

:)

thanks herbsgirl!

the only things i have in the house and could use right away are: garlic, lavender oil, saltwater, hydrogen peroxide, breastmilk, turmeric, vitamin c... i've been reading through some old posts, and these were among the things mentioned as alternatives to antibiotics. i just want to make sure i use them correctly for the topical application for a minor skin wound.

breast milk and/or hydrogen peroxide. If the peroxide bubbles, it's indicative of infection/immune response. (the layers of skin have been cut and are re-growing themselves). It's a good thing initially, but you don't want bubbling in a few days because you want those layers to have closed up.

I would give/offer garlic foods or Sodium Ascorbate (Vit C powder) internally to help the body fight off any possible infection. I don't think I would use garlic topically on this.

I wouldn't put garlic or oregano directly on the wound.  Both of those things can actually burn the skin.  I learned that the hard way.  You might be able to dilute the oregano oil to make it less harsh, but I'm not sure.

Goldenseal is great natural antibiotic. If you get the tincture you can apply it topically. Also B vitamin deficiency can predispose you to mouth infections, so if I were you I would brush and floss really thoroughly, rinse with salt water/ mouth wash, and apply the tincture four times a day. Also take a B complex, at least 3000 mg of vit C, avoid sugary foods, and drink lots of water.

The tincture is usually about $15. If you can't afford it, try packing the area with lumps of baking soda to draw out the infection and putting hot teabags on it for the same purpose. Get lots of rest and eat well.

Grapefruit seed extract (Yes, I know some consider it not natural), I have used this as a mouthwash with success and I have used it internally with great success

Tea Tree oil applied topically (with a bandaid) is great

Colloidal silver, I used this as a mouth rinse (works great) and topically and taken internally

Hydrogen peroxide, great mouth rinse (I am currently trying to heal my gums and this is part of my regiment) and of course great topically
