I'm wanting to start adding fish roe to my diet and am wondering if anyone has any ideas on cheap ways to get it. I've found some stuff online but it's really exspensive. Also this is a really dumb question but I'm new to seafood. Is roe the same as caviar??

I'm hoping to hear some thoughts on cheap roe, too. In the mean time, I found this site: http://www.caviarmore.com/buy-caviar/Salmon-Roe-Caviar-p-1-c-1079.html I don't have a lot of comparisons, but I think the 8 oz for $22 is a fair price... And they sell LOTS of other things that lend well to the TF, too, like goose liver, creme fraiche, etc.

If you buy it as caviar, it's really expensive. I'm lucky to have a great fish monger in town. When they cut up the fish, sometimes there's eggs inside, and they'll sell them to you for pretty cheap (relatively speaking). You'd need to contact someone who deals with whole fresh fish and ask in advance.

There are many kinds of roe, because there are many kinds of fish. If you have an Asian market near you, that's probably the cheapest place to get all kins of roe. I love salmon as well as tobiko (flying fish), and shad. All kinds really. Some roe is squishy, others firm. Many are salty, some are sweet.

Caviar is sturgeon roe from a specific place- the Caspian and Black seas (in Russia), and very expensive.
