DH thinks "Family Guy" is hysterically funny - Page 3

Overall, we're Family Guy fans, but lately I've found it depressing in a jumped-the-shark way and wish they'd just put it to bed.  It's like they lost most of the actors and it's just the Seth Macfarlane characters sparring with one another, sparsely, and the female characters are just embarrassing.  "Shut up, you stupid cow!" says Meg to Lois....yuck or yawn, I can't tell, it's overrun time to go-OOO.

Yep, that. The kids and I LOVE Family Guy. I think Seth McFarlane is wicked smart and funny as they come. It does require a certain kind of humor though. :)

I used to enjoy Family Guy, but the last two seasons or so seem reeeally repetitive so I've stopped watching it completely.  I've actually started liking South Park more, however.

OP, I passionately hate Family Guy. I think it's crass and disgusting, and everything that is wrong with our society, and it's supposed to be funny, but instead it's just basically the lowest denominator.

My DH loves it. So I really feel your pain there. I have a hard time understanding how he can think it's hilarious and still even be a decent person. I know that sounds really harsh to all the Family Guy lovers out there, but it's how I feel.

So, basically, I have told him, I don't want to be exposed to it. If he wants to watch it or talk about it it's going to have to be on his own time, and under no circumstances do I want DS watching it.

I know other people think I'm uptight and I don't care.

They have a right to like it and I have just as much right to dislike it. Just wanted you to know you're not alone.

I used to like it, but it's gotten really stupid in the past few years. We really like American Dad though. DH is in the Army, and he identifies a lot with Stan..... LOL. He likes to think that he wakes up the way Stan does each day.. "Good morning USA!" 

We love South Park too though. A lot of it is offensive, but they are unbiased in their offensiveness!  I also LOVE the Mormon episode! "dumb du du dudumb!"

Yeah, both DH and I are kind of over it.  When you rely on shock value, eventually you get desensitized to it.  There is only so much "in-your-face-no-holds-barred-I-can't-believe-they-went-there" type of stuff you can watch before it starts to feel like they are getting off on it more than trying to be ironic.

I had totally forgotten about that! Excuse me while I go wake up DH to remind him that the bird is the word. The bird bird bird the bird is word. 

Anyway, we watch it. I think it's funny but that's my sense of humor. If you don't care for it just ask him to watch it when you're not around. That's what I do when DH is watching south park.

Yeah, both of the above are exactly how I feel.  At first it was clever, now it's just old and tired and tries so hard to cross a line, any line, that it just seems desperate.  

I dislike the sense that if you don't like it, you must be "uptight" and all the blame lies on you.  I dislike it not because I'm uptight, but because it's a one-joke show ("look at how insensitive we are!  Look at us cross the line!  Look, look, LOOOOOOOK AT MEEEEE") and there's only so much of that I can take.  It's like the kid sitting in the back of the room in junior high making fart jokes and cracks about the teacher: at first it is funny, and then after a while it's just boring and kind of sad.

They've been cancelled twice and brought back twice. They aren't trying to do much of anything except make themselves laugh. They know fox won't get rid of them anytime soon.

I really hated it when it was first on TV. Then in college everyone would watch the old eps once it had been cancelled for the first time. I actually did enjoy watching those, but then it came back on TV and it was not funny anymore. I don't know if the show changed or if I did, but I really can't watch it any more. I didn't know it had been cancelled and brought back again.  

I really hate South Park.

I don't go out of my way to watch it, but if I do catch an episode I usually end up sitting there laughing ~ even when I try not to ;)

DH loves that show, I unfortunatly just don't "get it". I have better things to do than watch brain rot on TV.

This.  I found a lot of the jokes kept going when it should have ended 1 minute ago.  I haven't watched it in a while.  Love South Park, though

Part of the issue with the show now, I think, is that he (Seth) knows he has tons of wiggle room. Unlimited perhaps. He basically has an agreement that he can't be cancelled again. This might be leading to the "taking it too far" we've been posting about. The show's point is too be edgy, raunchy. and in poor taste. However, they are (perhaps more so in the past) smart about it. I think some of the funny is in the subtlety. Though for a show like this we may have to rethink the word subtle. ;)

DH and I do like the show....it's not supposed to be a model for your personal moral makeup, it's just supposed to be funny - a satire that mixes dark humor, slapstick comedy, wit and "poop jokes." At times I look at the TV and sort of grimace when something is a little too over the line for my personal tastes (like the Prom Night Dumpster Babies) but for the most part I find it hilarious. There are other shows out there that I think are WAY worse as far as making people think that being a fool is OK (Jersey Shore!) as well as shows that front as "history" when in fact they are just violence filled porn (Boardwalk Empire!) Very seldom have carTOONS ever been works of non-fiction....they are just silly shows that allow comics and writers to express their "art form." I'd rather watch FG anyday over Bridalplasty or Rock of Love!

And yes, in fact....the Bird IS the WORD!

I really don't like Family Guy. I have really good friends who love it, and whenever I'm over there, I've resorted to begging to watch anything but. I'd rather watch infomercials. They like to get high and watch Family Guy--it's what they do for fun. Hmm, now that I've typed that out, I might consider finding some new friends I just don't "get" the humor. I mean, I "get" it--I just don't think it's funny. I might have lost my sense of humor somewhere along the way though.

Maybe a doobie would help you understand....??? You have enough of a sense of humor to sit around with a bunch of people who are stoned and watching cartoons....so I wouldn't say that your sense of humor has been lost! haha
