A fairly new friend of mine has a dog that I consider is being neglected. She is a sweet young girl with two little boys, but obviously does not wear the pants in the family, has no income of her own, and really no control over the household. They recently moved to new rental home, and the landlords said they could skip the pet deposit if they kept their dog outside. Dog is super sweet and affectionate, a pit bull mix of some kind with a very short coat. Temps here have been extremely cold for the last two weeks, with lows around 10-15 degrees f. Dog is outdoors with no dog house. They shelter her under the deck with justa couple of blankets and a piece of cardboard to sleep on. She was shvering last time I saw her, and I am concerned that she will be seriously hurt or killed by this weather with her short coat. I gave a couple of blankets and a dog bed for the dog last week, and rode friend's azz about bringing the dog in at night in this weather, even if she is in a bathroom or crate, at least she is warm. She said she brought it up to husband and he blew up over it---- he has bought himslef a 3d tv and pool table this month, cost total about 2k, but he can't afford the pet deposit of 300 bucks so his dog doesn't suffer and lose her ears to frostbite. A-hole!!!!!!!!!!!!! But as I said, friend is on thin ice with her dh and doesn't have the place to demand I'm afraid. I would steal her dog if I could, no lie, but my dog is not friendly, it's not possible. Our friendship has cooled over this as I can't stand to see it, but I really want to help dog if I can. Animal control is not going to help, the deck is "shelter" in their book.
I think dogs can live outside happily, but they at least need adequate dog houses for shelter, and this pup needs a sweater with her short coat. Ugh, I can't stand this.
