MPLS gardening - Page 3

so what did/are you all planting for vegies?

I am also a garden virgin.

I am useing part of my parents plot so I have some help if needed.

I picked up some pepper (hot and regular), tomatoes (roma and big boy), cabbage, green beans, spinich, cukes, zucuinni, and a bunch of herbs.

I am not sure what does well in MN.

also give me some basics in pest controle (birds, rabbits, squirles). I have been saving the junk mail cd's (aol, etc) to try and make a bird scare. but have no idea where to start. any ideas?

next we need ideas on storing harvests or maybe we could do a vegie swap. thats if there is anything left over - I have been craving vegies like crazy

I know you put in (sp) after that word, but please accept this in the light hearted vein I intend.... :LOL

I have been giggling for days after reading your post, I just can't keep from thinking back on it... wondering if I should plant some "perineals" as well, and if I did, what on earth would the neighbors say when they saw them bloom?

Do they bloom well?

Are they night bloomers?

Shade loving?

Full sun?

Full moon?!?!

lol - dhGranny, you're hysterical!

Deb - your garden sounds great!
Why are you worried about pests though? I've never had a problem w/ birds - an only very small problems w/ squirrels, etc - no biggie. And it's fun to see the bunnies - they don't eat much if any. I just plant extra - it's not an issue here in SW Mpls anyway....

Now, if you were doing corn - I'd say watch out for the raccoons! But that's all. And haven't ever been able to outsmart them anyway so have just let them have their corn.

everything has peeked up in my garden!
unfortunately, the bunnies found that out too and trimmed the tops off all my peas. EEK! especially as the kids and i LOVE them! so i put up a tiny fence next to them, but not sure if the damage done has made them DONE or not... note to self: don't put peas on the edge next year! will try some more from seed. i know they are cool weather, and cool weather it STILL is...

tomatoes are turning yellow from all this rain. hopefully if/when it ceases, the plants will become green again...

i think the perinneal garden i did up front is doing just fine, except for the oriental poppy (which was zone 5-9, so i was leary about it from the start...). it is turning yellow, yellower than the tomatoes!

DH is building fence now! We still have not planted anything. We have only bought our seeds. We may buy potted herbs tomorrow at the Farmers Market.

how are the gardens going?

mine is disipointing so far :

only have gotten 2 green beans , some lettuce, spinich and my peppers are almost there. my tomatoes are so slow this year - I going nuts waiting LOL my cabbage is big but no heads yet.

anyone know how the farmers markets are doing?
I need some vegies for a salid I am brining to a family picnic on Sunday. I won bother going there is the selection is nill.

Well, I am totally sorry that your garden is not going so well, but at the same time I am relieved cause I thought it might be just me! Cause really, I have no idea what I am doing.

Our tomatoes are also SLOW. We have had our grape tomatoes blooming and blooming though. There have been quite a few of those.

The green peppers are growing. The purple peppers I killed before, I have to check them out to see if they are coming back.

Still just flowers on a few other plants......habeneros I think. I have no idea what the appropriate growing cycle for ANY of this is though.

The squash have flowers.

The peas have grown a few, but I have no idea when you pick them. How do you know? With tomatoes it is more obvious. What should I look for with the peas?

All of my herbs in the house were killed by non-watering when I was gone in June (thanks honey . So, none of those for me, although I would like to try again.

We have a few other plants going that I honestly don't remember exactly what they are. It is a fun mystery!

It's been so cool that it's been a tough year for vegetables. Of course I never planted any - my first yr w/ no veggies since '87, but mama gathering just took over all my time. Have some really nice flowers this yr though.
Curvie - if you want I'll check out your plants on Monday & tell ya what's what & when (or if!) it should bear veggies. I think it's great that you just dove right in to gardening and are figuring it out as you go.

Snow - that would be awesome! I really have no idea what I am doing! I do know that Quinn, Max and I picked and ate some of the grape tomatoes today, and they were great!

Our green beans are rocking. We planted two types. Our tomatoes are huge and many but none of them are red except the grape ones.

Deb if you want lettuce let me know but not tomorrow night as we are having Angie's party.

I planted greens that I have yet to identify.

Our cilantro went great but I really never used it as we had no tomatoes for salsa. Cannot believe that I did not make salsa this summer.

Our cukes, hot peppers and green peppers are doing well.

We did not get many radishes. I will see what happens with the corn and the carrots.

Our peas did well too. I am sad our snow peas are done. I think the sugar snap may be too.

Here are a few photos but they are a few weeks old so things have really gotten bigger since these.

the green beans go all the way up the rope to the roof. They are the long Italian kind.

I am mostly lurking over hear to see what everyone else is doing...
I bought two tomato plants that my mom and Olivia put in the ground when xav was two weeks old. I have done nothing to them, not watered or staked and i don't even know if there are tomatos on them.

I think I will stick to C's stand at the NE farmers market. Lots of good tomatoes and peppers there!

Jeez, KJ, what are you spraying on those things?!??!

That's impressive!

You will have to let us know how those tomatoes are J.....did you ever do the placenta?
The placenta is still in the freezer. Maybe next year?
I was just out in the yard. Lots of blossoms, no tomatos...and I bet it is too late to get any...oh well. I only spent two dollars on the plants and then they sat on the porch for a month. Can't expect much!

crud, crud, crud

This was my first summer as a gardener.

I got 2 cucumbers and some basil, but probably the same basil leaves I started with in May.

I have about 40 tomatoes on the vine, all green and probably never going to turn red.

I'm so disappointed.

rodents ate all my peas. they tried and tried again to regrow, but it just never worked. i am so disappointed, b/c i think those are my FAV out of the garden!

cherry tomatoes reddening a couple a day and the plants are growing so big! i caged them, but i am thinking i will need to get some tall posts for the upper stalks.

beefsteaks are growing, but still green and hard. and some rodent keep picking a few, nibbling a bite or two and leaving them on the ground.

but a friend who works in a greenhouse/nursery said green tomatoes can be picked when they are big and put in a brown paper bag and left on the counter to ripen. they don't taste quite the same, but it works if one is getting desperate.

green beans and burgundy beans are producing like mad! yum! and the kids love to eat them as i clip them. some rodent is also eating those, and the plant leaves...

cucumbers are starting. have gotten 4 off so far and i see a bunch more growing!

something ate my BIG bell pepper, but i see some more starting, one almost ready.

and the flowers are finally starting to bloom...

pretty successful year overall, despite my garden nibbling rodent...

Any One Thinking About Spring

when do you start seeds sprouting for the garden?
I have always bought plants from the greenhouse.
I am thinking tomatoes, zucunni, cucumbers, peppers, green beans this year.
I've been thinking about this all day. I'm not sure if I'm gonna start my seeds in a couple weeks or just wait and plant the seeds after the last frost. Last year, I didn't plant anything (seeds or plants) until June and everything turned out wonderful.

Knowing me, next thing I know, May will be here and I'll just be buying my seeds.
