How to applique onto recycled wool?

Thread Starter

I want to make some arm warmers out of a felted wool sweater for my mom for christmas.  I just don't know what material to use - another felted sweater (I have a different color that I could felt), cotton, etc? Or how to do it.  I'd prefer to use my machine as I stink at hand sewing.  What stitch on my machine do I use?  Any help would be appreciated!

Have you felted the sweater yet?  I'm not a big fan of felted wool for clothing.  It's just so thick and stiff.  Just thought I'd mention that.  If you've got true felt now, that is, the fabric doesn't have any stretch, you can use a woven.  I'd just match up the colors and textures to get something pleasing, then experiment (using scraps of the same fabric) with your sewing machine to figure out the best settings to use.  I like wool with wool myself, but that's just me:)  Stabilizers are so helpful with appliques, too.  They're useful for tracing and cutting shapes, sticking the applique to the fabric, and helping it all feed correctly into your machine.  I think you may not have gotten other responses because there's no one way to do this, you have to play around with what you've got to see what works.
