Another gate question

I have a 5 month old so need to start thinking about this!  I have a wide open stairs in our split level.  There is a wall on one side but only a wooden railing with post on the other side to connect to.  Any ideas for what would work?  The stairs are hardwood and lead down to the ceramic tiled foyer so I feel like we definitely need something.

We have pretty much the same setup in our place.  We use a gate that we have mounted to the wall and the wooden post.  Our cats have deystroyed the post anyways so it's no big deal to have some holes in it.  It is one that you click into place so it's not something that you can just open and shut, you have to step over it or remove the whole thing when you want to get by.  PITA.  I wish we had put one that you could just open and close.  But, when I sent my husband out to buy a gate I just assumed he would get one like that, but no lol.
