helping kids be true to themselves and also get their work done?

Does anyone worry about how to help their kids retain their ability to be in the present moment AND to be concerned primarily about being true to themselves rather than winning others' approval, while at the same time trying to prepare them to live successfully in our society, which means having self-discipline, planning, and working when it is called for?

This could also go in the homeschooling forum - not sure...

Any suggestions about a better location for this question?

Yes, I do.

I try to do that in my own life and advise and model and help my kids work out the balances between:

autonomy /  interdependence

individual desires / community norms and needs

complete honesty /  tact

kindness / overbearingness

gratification now / delayed gratification

There's no magic formula that I have found yet :)

Good way of summarizing the issue.  I am struggling with it a lot.  Thanks for replying.
