My 1 yr old has found a "lovey" URGH!

Okay it's not that I mind him having a lovey. It's just what he has chosen isn't exactly lovey material and is causing such a pain *&%!

So here's some background, we're not completely t.v. free. But I've tried to limit ds2's t.v. to PBS and the Wiggles (which his older brother loves). I like the Wiggles because at least they are real people (not animated) and when ds 1 watches them he gets up and dances along at least half the time.

So about a month ago ds 2 started bringing over the Wiggles video taper cover to us and saying "uh, uh, uh". And of course we thought "Oh so cute he wants to watch the Wiggles"(which we didn't always play the video when he asked).  We recently had to move all our tapes and DVD's because he could get into the drawer and was scattering them everywhere all day long. So now a few are on a bookshelf and some in a deep cabinet where he can't reach. But NOW the first thing he does in the morning is go to the shelf and scream/screech until he gets a tape/DVD. For example dh brought him downstairs this morning and he was screaming for a good 10 minutes before I came down and finally gave him a tape.  If I move a basket, that is in front of the others in the cabinet, and he sees them.....well then he will scream until he gets one of those too.

He will scream at you to put them in the player but I've tried to be pretty consistent and not let him watch it more than I normally would (usually one 30-40 min video a day). But he will carry the tapes around all day and if you put one up out of his reach he will scream until you give it back. I actually had to take a Wiggles tape cover to the grocery store the other day. Kind of a pain especially when carrying him in an Ergo, getting wacked in the face with a video tape is kind of anoying.  He'll barely put them down to do anything else, even play or eat....... This is so ridiculous!

I'm not sure what I need whether advise or just commiseration. I'm hoping this is a short lived phase and he'll give up on the need to hold onto them. I did think of trying to find a Wiggles little pillow or blanket, but I'm not sure he'd take to it the same way as tape case.

LOL I can commiserate with you!

My 1 yo DS is currently attached to a rather large stainless steel mixing bowl. Yes, he even snuggles it when he is tired. And yeah, its a PITA when he screams for it when I'm trying to wear him! This morning I got bonked in the face with it as he absoulutely NEEDED to hold onto it while nursing.

I'm just dealing with it though, and letting him have it. I know with him, its just a phase. He attaches to odd things for a few weeks, then finds something else. The last thing before his bowl was a small foam ladybug. I'm hoping the next 'lovey' will be something small and managable like that was!

Ds is doing the odd attachment things right now too, but non have stuck for more than a few days.

Lets see we've had some toys  (two different Cows, Noah figure)

A roll of toilet paper

a pen

Poor Dakota's big red Kong ball (also Dakota's favorite)

a book he hates to read

a spoon

and right now we are varying a bit with Christmas ornaments.

DS, 15 months, has recently grown quite attached to his "tanoo" (as he calls it). It is a wooden yellow triangle that came with a shape sorting toy. He carries it around with him. He wakes up at night, crying, calling out for his 'tanoo'. And, of course, being small, he loses it ALL THE TIME. Sigh.

My son went through a period of picking random things that he absolutely had to hold onto. One naptime, it was my car keys. His Halloween pumpkin is a frequent one but usually for going out of the house rather than to sleep with. He went through a flag phase where he really wanted to have this smallish but rather pointy ended flag all the time. It completely ruined at least one bedtime (we didn't want to let him sleep with it due to the pointiness).

He has taken to some stuffed animals recently and it makes things a bit easiser. I'd rather than his stuffed cow in bed than the flag.

My DS's lovie is a mole I have on the lower corner of my mouth.... He simply MUST touch it when he's nursing or trying to get back to sleep. Some times he just runs up to me, presses it, and shakes his finger like he's trying to press it into my face. It's not like it's a big witches wart, it's kinda skin tagish.

Be thankful yours is not attached to your face! lol.gif

Could you get him a wiggles book? That may be easier to take to the grocery and such.

ds1 attached to a mylar helium balloon for a while.  bad idea because 1) its a strangulation hazard with the string and 2) they deflate in a couple of days.  along the lines of the mole, he loooves my tummy.  he loves kneeding with his hands and putting his feet in it.  its super fun trying to nurse an infant with a toddler attached to your tummy :P
