I worked in Early Childhood Education for 6 years in an Administrative position and ran 2 large playgroups, and participated in a childcare session, and helped prepare parenting curricula. Even though I was in administration I was participating in a lot of the child development activities and I really enjoyed it, and several of the other staff told me I would be great as a teacher...
I left the field in 2006 and worked a short time in banking, then for the past 3 years as a Document Coordinator, and now I am working from home as a Virtual Assistant.
And I am really unhappy. I don't spend nearly as much time with my 15 month old as I want, and I am chained to my computer most of the day, and I am SICK SICK SICK of being on the computer all day. I'm always working when everything else is going on, since I can't work while it's just me and the babe at home.
I want to go back to school to be an elementary teacher but I need a decent income right now (can't do just school and no job), at least until we get some bills paid off (cars, etc).
I have been thinking about running a daycare for years. Hubby is reluctant to go for the idea b/c he doesn't want to come home from work (sometimes as early as 2 PM) and "there be a bunch of strange kids in the house," but we have a decently sized finished basement that I could use to keep the kids away from him if he is home early. I am also thinking about targeting school teachers only for the schedule (hubby leaves at 430 AM for work so I could start as early as 6 or 630, I have a friend who is a teacher with a 16 mo old, maybe my first client, who could help me network) so I can have some time off on holidays and over the summer. I would begin working on getting licensed as soon as I got my first kids.

What are some considerations/thoughts/tax considerations/ideas that I should consider? I plan on talking w/my CPA on Monday, but are the taxes as high as any other self-employment (I pay like 36% right now).
Â
I just read a post here along the lines of "I am so done with childcare" or something and that was kind of scary.
Â
Do the childcare providers really get to run the show, if you have kids that you can't control you can give them up and find other clients?
Â
Thanks in advance for any advice!
