Positive Outcomes With Bacterial Vaginosis?

I'm about 9 weeks pregnant with my first and a few weeks ago started spotting and had localized pelvic pain. Went to the ER thinking it might be an ectopic pregnancy and it turned out to be bacterial vaginosis and a yeast infection (no symptoms aside from the spotting) and an unrelated cyst. The doctor put me on metrogel for 10 days. During that time, I had my first meeting with our midwife and she wasn't optimistic that the antibiotic would clear anything up. It didn't. A few days after treatment ended, the spotting came back and my midwife told me to take GSE orally and acidophilus both orally and vaginally and do a vaginal rinse with Hybiclense for three days. I have a lot more faith in my midwife than I do the doctors, and I trust that this treatment will help things, but I'm terrified of losing my baby because of the infection. Does anyone have any positive stories to share?

I had bacterial vaginosis when I got pregnant this time (actually got it at the same time I got pregnant... long story) and did not lose the baby or have any problems.  With my last pregnancy I also had bacterial vaginosis at some point (can't remember which trimester) and everything was fine.  My midwife suggested using Boric Acid to adjust the PH and get rid of the infection.  I filled 2 "00" gel caps with boric acid (bought and walmart) and inserted them twice daily.  It produces a lot of discharge though, so if you do this be sure to have some maxi pads!  I use this when not pregnant too and it always works great and gets rid of the infection in 3 or 4 days.

Wow, gets rid of? The ER doctor made it sound like I was doomed to battle BV the entire pregnancy (if I was even lucky enough to keep the baby). My midwife doesn't seem really concerned, and if it's not as dire as I was told, I understand why! Thanks, just what I needed to hear. I'll definitely try the boric acid if the regimen I'm on doesn't work as well as it should.

I'd take the ER people's paranoia inducing info with a grain of salt.  They will not tell you home remedies when they can make money selling you antibiotics.  Seriously, I have been using Boric acid for Vaginosis for 6 years now and have never had it not work.  You and your baby should be just fine.

Thank goodness I'm planning a homebirth with a wonderful midwife and won't have to put up with any of this medical nonsense anymore. You think I would have known better than to go in to the ER, but pregnancy is really scary! :)  Thanks for the pep talk.

BV is pretty common and more common in pregnancy than not. Sorry the ER doctor freaked you out. :(
