Swaddlebees prefolds pilling on first wash?

We just bought a dozen of the unbleached Swaddlebees prefolds in Newborn size from amazon.com.  We pre-washed them according to the instructions on the package and they pilled up horribly! This didn't happen with my DD's bleached Chinese prefolds 5 years ago- is it normal or did I get a defective batch of dipes?

I can't say for sure, but I have a friend who works at a baby shop that sells these, and she steered me away from them because she said they weren't as nice as some others. Maybe this is part of the reason?

Yeah...that's what I was afraid of. I was all excited because they were so much cheaper than the other brands available through amazon- guess I just found out why :(
