yea. is this "normal"? my milk is dairy and gluten free (in case allergies have to do with it?!) tia

My Marah (she's 5 weeks old in a few hours) just went 2 weeks without pooping. She just went a couple hours ago and it was surprisingly small considering I was ready for a huge poo-splosion. (think she's gearing up for the big one, lol)

Anyway.. yes! It's normal for a EBF to go up to 2 weeks without a BM. Breastmilk is the perfect food... there's very little waste and little ones can use all of your milk to grow. :)

i'm glad you asked this, because i am wondering the same thing.  my roberta is just about the same age, and hasn't pooped in almost two days.  i remember the poops getting spaced out eventually with my first, but i thought it didn't happen until they were a bit older.

My nurslings do this, we just had a poop here after 3 days without, and she's more regular than my oldest DD who used to go a week inbetween, and this has been the case from the beginning.

today makes 4 whole days! so this is okay? my mom is pressuring me to stick a thermometer up her bum. should I do this? I worry that if I do she won't learn to do this on her own (rely on it) . what are the chances that she's really constipated? she's had ciapers 1-2x a day that have  a tiny tiny streak of yellow---does this point towards normal or constipated?

thanks everyone...I'm sure the ones whose bodies wait longer to have a BM have a harder time and are more uncomfortable right? I mean when she gets fussy this is probably why? and a harder tummy?

My EBF boy goes a week all the time between poops. Completely normal. It's because breastmilk is so easily digestible that they don't need to poop much out!

It's virtually impossible for a EBF to be constipated... 4 days is really normal, not on the far end of the spectrum. If baby isn't getting formula, solids or anything else baby will be fine. I've had 4 EBF babies... and ALL of them at various points went close to TWO WEEKS without a poop even after they were going 6-8 times a day before.

I used to be a pediatric nurse and the longest I've seen is 29 days. 29 DAYS!!! Can you imagine if that was usdizzy.gif As long as baby is otherwise acting normally and doesn't have a hard, distended belly, all is good!

As long as baby is still urinating regularly and is otherwise happy and gaining properly, not pooping is not a problem.

And going longer times does not make a bf baby uncomfortable. BM is so easily digestible. Do not try to "assist" your baby by putting anything in their bottom, administering laxatives, or anything else. Just keep nursing and baby will poop eventually, when their body is ready.
