OK I have to brag a bit....

DD is 7.  We have been working with her on reading since she was 5s and we weren't really getting anywhere. She started kindy at 5, halfway through they said she was too immature and couldn't pay attention (this was pre-dx). At that point I started working with her.  It's a long story but I ended up homeschooling her for a while and now she's in public school again.  Her new teacher is amazing and noticed that she is having difficulty. So, we have really been working at this.

This last week, it took her 3 days, but she managed to read "Are You My Mother?"  BY HERSELF!!!!!!

Tonight, I was putting laundry away (after the kids bedtime), I walked into dd's room and she was HIDING and READING A BOOK!!!!  I caught her and all she said was, "mom what does "q" say and how do I say "q-u-i-e-t".  So I didn't get on to her for being up past bedtime, instead I sat down and helped her through the words.

OK just HAD to BRAG!!!  MY DD IS READING!!!!!!!

yeah! 7 is a pretty typical age for reading. Good for you both!

YES - yeah for you AND her...

I always say (and few people listen) that reading is developmental, just like walking talking and potty training....

Just because SOME kids can walk at 9 (and by some accounts even 7! months) that doesn't mean we need to make all kids try and do that

So just because some kids are ready to read at five doesn't mean ALL children will be - the devastating difference is that the kids who are pushed to read before they are ready

are well aware that they are somehow 'behind' their peers and it hurts - it also makes them dislike reading :(

I just wish schools could 'get' this and not stress the kids out so much!

But you and your daughter should be proud of your hard work and enjoy the fruits of your labor!
