Chicken Pox in Pregnancy? Help!

I am 19 weeks 6 days pregnant. I work in a daycare and I am not immune to chickenpox.

I just found out a co-worker has shingles. I am very worried about contracting this from her. I don't know much about what I should be worried about, but I do know my Dr said for me to get some sort of shot if I become exposed?

Any info or advice? I am worried sick :(

if i'm not mistaken, shingles can be spread from direct contact, but not indirect contact. i'd get the shot just to be safe if i were in your shoes but try not to panic.

Shingles and chicken pox are the same thing. Both are caused by the Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV), a type of herpes virus. Chicken pox is the initial infection. After the skin heals from the pox marks, the virus retreats into the nerve roots of the spine and can migrate back out years later to form an irritating rash called "shingles." The fact that the lesions are later distributed along parts of the body supplied by particular nerve routes helps in the diagnosis. Both forms of VZV are contagious, and if exposure is within the household, non-immunized individuals will more than likely get it (probably as chicken pox).

In pregnancy, chicken pox is extremely dangerous, both because it's dangerous in adults anyway and because pregnancy alters the immunological strength of the expectant mother. Varicella pneumonia is the complication that is feared, and such a complication can even lead to death!

pregnant mamas who are VZV non-immune. should stay away from Christmas shopping, crowds, theaters, etc., because for any crowd there's got to be some VZV floating around. Risk to the baby is more likely if infected in early pregnancy than late. If exposed, VZIG (antibody shot) should be given if less than 20 weeks pregnant. Certainly before or after a pregnancy, VZIG should be given to immunize women of childbearing age.

In prenatal emergencies with VZV, the antiviral drug acyclovir, the same thing given for genital herpes, can be used in large doses. So far there is no evidence that acyclovir hurts the baby, and because it's been around for a while, that's a meaningful safety record.

I snagged this from an article on Baby zone

Thanks for the article!

I called my DR and they said to come in and get my blood drawn to see if I have been exposed. I hope I haven't. :(

My hubby had the shingles in September. I am immune but our two y/o is not: never had it or been vaxed for it. Everything I read online stated that to catch chicken pox from shingles but it requires direct contact with the fluid from the blisters. It isn't as contagious as chicken pox. Our toddler didn't catch the chicken pox from hubby's shingles.

Also, just to moderate your fears a little, maybe, my friend had shingles while pregnant and she and baby were fine.  She said it was definitely not fun, but there was no death or mangled babies or anything bad that happened.

Definitely get the IG shot if you think that's what you should do, though!

can you do a titer? I am not sure what that involves, but I got chickenpox as an adult and it was not that bad, it was really really mild, I missed a week of school, but otherwise, not scary like everyone said - in fact I had it for a while and didn't know what it was!. Then I was told because I had a "mild" case I would get it again, but another doctor said that wasn't true. The thought was that I was exposed a lot as a child (I have 4 brothers and sisters who had it, but I didn't) that it maybe it helped me get it not so bad. Maybe, hopefully were your exposed and just never got it, or got it really mildly?
