is it possible to shorten a scarf?

i bought this scarf online for my hubby, but it's way too long(looked small in the pics) and my hubby specifically said he doesn't like huge scarfs. it's a really nice, soft knitted wool scarf and i'd really like to keep it.  is it possible to shorten it without ruining it?  if so, what's the best way to go about it? unravel the ends? cut down the center and then try to resew  the two pieces together? 

i don't knit so i don't know how to go about this or if i'd just be attempting the impossible.

any help would be great.

It probably is, but it would be really hard if you don't knit, since you'll need to be able to tell the beginning end of the scarf from the bound off edge (only the b/o edge will unravel), unravel it, pick up the loose stitches, then bind off the cut end.  Do you have a friend who knits who can do it for you?

Do you sew at all?  Or know someone who does?  If you do here's what you can do:  

Take the scarf to your sewing machine and decide how long you want your scarf to be.  Use thread that is the same color as the scarf so the line doesn't show so obvious. Sew across the scarf back and forth a couple of times on BOTH ends.  You'd do this to keep the scarf from unraveling when you cut it. Cut it close to where you've sewn but NOT TOO close.     

After you've decided  how long you want your scarf to be and you've sewed across where you want to cut, go ahead and cut the scarf below where you've sewn, remember, close but not too close to the sewing line.  

You'll need to hide where you've cut and sewn so you'll have to add some tassels. You will need some yarn for the tassels that will complement the scarf.  If you don't know how to make tassels, don't worry,  it's very easy.  Here is link that can show you how.     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMcWVUwgNRQ

You'll want to make enough tassels to go across the part of the scarf where you've cut and sewn to hide the rough edges.

I'd probably just throw it in the washer and cross my fingers.  Since it's wool, it will surely shrink.

If she did that...it would felt and and might turn out mis-shaped   she totally does NOT want that to happen, especially since it's a nice scarf.
