can I have a VBAC even if I have a 1 layer incision??

I recently found out that I am pregnant with my second. My first was a c-section and I so despereately want to have a VBAC.5 I called a midwife today and she asked me if I had my medical records from my c-section because if the doctor did a 1-layer incision then I may not be able to have a VBAC, but if it is a 2-layer then I might be able to still think about it. I just found out this information today and have not had a chance to call the hospital for my reccords yet, so I don;t know what type of incision I had. This scares me! WHy didn't I know about this stuff. Is this true?

The only thing my MW has said is if the incision was up and down rather across then I would not be able to VBAC. I don't know which type of stitching I had but both are fine, the double stitching is preferred. I haven't heard of a MW not accepting a single stitch, but my MW did just start a policy of having an ultrasound at 36 weeks to check the scar for weaken areas.

I have seen a lot on these boards that a double layer is preferred, but not necessary for a VBAC. It didn't even come up with my midwives.

Yep, I had a VBAC after a c/s with one-layer uterine closure. I switched OBs to a really VBAC-friendly one, and he said that while he slightly preferred a 2-layer closure, it was really not a big risk and not a big deal. Interestingly, the OB who did my c/s with the single-layer closure knew I would go for a VBAC if I had another baby and said, "You can definitely VBAC after this."

I've had 3 VBACs w/ a single layer closure. All w/ the OB who did the single layer closure so he must not think it's a big deal.

JMO you should find another midwife. Focusing on how your uterus was closed, IMO does not suggest a willingness to provide you the emotional support you need for a VBAC.

I'm planning a VBAC and have no idea how many layers my incision was closed with and neither I, or my midwives, care.  I've heard the research go both ways but it seems like care providers have latched on the to the double layer closure as the preferable closure

Have you been to ICAN?  www.ican-online.org  The forums or yahoogroup might have some more insight on the matter and/or be able to point you in the direction of a midwife who isn't so jumpy about how many layers your incision was closed with.

As I understand it, the data on single- vs double-layer closure is debatable anyway.  Some think that the extra stitches (and therefore extra punctures to the uterus) can contribute to weakness of the closure.
