My close friend has a 14 year old Weimaraner that is her baby. She adores this dog like a child.
About 4 months ago the dog became seriously ill and was rushed to the pet ER. After all the tests came back negative for an explanation my friend asked they run the test for anti-freeze poisoning as a last resort (she read an article about the test). The test came back positive and a VERY expensive (and traumatic for the dog) 48 hour treatment was done. The dog improved and went home.
Â
Now, this dog was always kept indoors only. She is closely supervised during walks. She is 14 years old and goes along slowly and is very easy to supervise. My friend was distraught that somehow the dog found anti freeze and became even MORE hyper vigilant, if that was possible.
Â
Two weeks ago the dog became critically ill and was again rushed to the pet ER. AND SHE TESTED POSITIVE FOR ANTI FREEZE POISONING AGAIN!!
Â
Okay, the ER said between these two incidents, no other dog in the city has tested positive for anti freeze (apparently all incidents are registered with the city) and the only dose left in the city was transferred to the Pet ER and AGAIN an expensive and traumatic 48 hour stay began for her dog. ER also said a dog of this size would need to consume at least two spoonfuls to become this ill (dog was dithering, shaking, collapsing etc.). In other words it was not like the dog licked a puddle of rainwater with a trace of anti freeze washed from somewhere else--ER said dog must have had direct contact twice to become so ill.
Â
Friend and I searched every inch of house and yard and there is no sign of ANY anti freeze. The dog is NEVER alone outside, ever. She is watched like a hawk. She is restricted in the house as well, unless friend is home.
Â
Friend is considering moving in with relatives, she is so stunned and incredulous that her dog could be the ONLY one in the city poisoned TWICE despite constant supervision.
Â
Now she wonders if this test could be wrong? Is there ANY other explanation? She is desperate for help!
