fabric for napkins?

I'm a beginner when it comes to sewing, and I'm looking for some simple projects I can sew to become more confident in my sewing abilities.  I would really like to sew some very basic napkins to use, but I'm at a loss as to what fabric I should use.  The kind of cotton they sell at craft stores, like Joann's, seem too thin/flimsy for napkins.

Any suggestions, pretty please?

Our napkins are made in a variety of solid colors from Kona cotton found at Joann's.  We have had them for a year and a half and they still are working great.  Plus the kids like choosing what color napkin they are going to use.

Thank you so much for your suggestion!  I will check out this fabric on my next trip to Joann's.  smile.gif

I make mine out of just the quilter's cotton from JoAnns's and they've held up for a few years.  I don't really think that they feel too thin once the fabric is washed up, but everyone has different tastes, so maybe you might.

I used to do double sided (reversiable) ones from the calico prints / quilter's fabric at Jo-Ann's. Now I use double sided (so 2 layers) of Flannel from Wal-Mart or where ever. I love the softness and and absorancy of the flannel better than just the calico prints and I make my napkins smaller than normal cloth napkins about 9.5 x 11 so from a 1/4 yard of 2 kinds of fabric - I get a set of 4. Mine have lasted at least 5 years so far.
