What is this on my fireplace?

We moved this summer and our new house has a fireplace. We would eventually like to be able to build fires, once our kids get a bit older. It doesn't look like a normal fireplace though. It also has an insert thing that looks to be heavy cast iron. It covers the whole front of the fireplace, and has two solid doors that can be opened or locked shut. It looks kinda like a wood burning stove that's been put into a fireplace.

Oh, and it also has a plug...

I figured if anyone could tell me more about it and what it's uses might be, it would be you ladies. I can take a picture if it would help.

Sounds like a fireplace insert.  We just spent big bucks for one.  If it's in working condition, and you can get firewood, you'll be nice and warm soon.  They are a lot more efficient than a fireplace fire.  If it were me, I'd get the whole thing inspected and cleaned, and the inspector should be able to give you more information about it.  If the seller didn't emphasize it, it probably needs repair.  Check the yellow pages under Chimney Sweeps or Chimney Cleaning and Inspecting.

Well, it is my late grandfather's house, but I do know he never used it. He bought the house new, and it came with it, but wasn't interested in making fires.it's at least 15 years old though, and never been used, so it definitely needs some kind of inspection and repair, I am sure.

Inserts are pricey so if it checks out, great for you!

Btw, the plug is for a blower, I bet.  Look for a switch to turn it on.  There's no reason it shouldn't work just fine if your grandfather never used it, but you should still get it inspected.  You could have stuff in the chimney/liner.

You can find out more about inserts at hearth.com.  Someone there might be familiar with what you've got.
