Great article refuting Dr. Oz's pro-circumcision stance

Now, about circumcisions and STDs:  Some say parents should get their sons circumcised because it reduces chances for getting or giving STDs and provides a major benefit for women’s health. Some say the foreskin of an uncircumcised man can harbor viruses and bacteria. In reality, it’s not quite as cut and dried as that. Circumcised men get plenty of STDs and it’s a mistake to imply they aren’t as capable of infecting their partners as guys with foreskins. If a guy is going from one STD-infected sex partner to another without using condoms, it isn’t his foreskin that’s the problem. Good hygiene and safe sex are the best ways to prevent disease. 

The comments from the pediatrician and Diekema from the AAP were really reassuring. Surprised this is a mainstream media article.

The article also includes a link to a video of Dr. Oz "demonstrating" his theory on how foreskins trap more bacteria than foreskinless penises with a woman in a turtleneck and confetti. It was easily one of the most baffling things I've ever seen on TV.

Dr Oz's cultural practices make him completely biased and almost crazy.  Look up photos of a typical Turkish circumcision, but only if you have a strong stomach and hard heart.

It's a shame he chose to ignore or is ignorant of the fact that smegma has lysozome (an antibacterial protein found in breastmilk and tears) that can protect men against STD's.  Of course, most docs don't want parents to know that.

Thanks for the link. I feel somewhat reassured that the AAP is apparently not planning to make a radical change in favor of circumcision.

Woah. Apparently in Turkey, they wait until some boys are as old as 12-13 and throw a huge party with the circs being done in front of everyone!

Yep.  It's sickening.  I have seen some photo albums of it, and you can see the boys' terrified faces.  I also read an account of a man who remembers being taken to the hospital in 5th grade and waking up, knowing he had been circumcised.  He said his relationship with his parents was never the same.  No joke - how could you ever trust them again?  And you can see how men like Dr. Oz HAVE to believe that circumcision is wonderful, after having survived THAT.

Finally I got to see this demonstration! (For some reason it was the only episode I was unable to watch online on my local tv station.) I had heard it described in great detail, but it made even less sense to watch it.

But onto the article, I agree it was well-done and provides hope that the AAP task force is not as pro-circ as Diekema previously led us to believe.
