Waiting for Dr. to call - is this normal with the flu?

DD has influenza A - confirmed via test on Saturday.

She had a couple really rough days but, on Monday night, her fever broke and she seemed to be feeling better.

Yesterday was a great day.  Energy was lower than normal and she continues to cough but, no fever and her appetite came back a bit.

She continued to cough during the night but, nothing gasping or wheezing.

She woke up this morning saying she doesn't feel well.  She has a fever again.  100.9.

Does this sound like a normal flu?  Or could this be a secondary infection?

Like I said, I am waiting for a call from the Dr. but, I'm just wondering if anyone has experience?

Well, returning fever is a sign of secondary infection and she does report feeling worse again. That said, her fever isn't high at all. My son had a secondary infection and the second fever was extremely high.

I don't know essentially but if the fever continues to rise I'd be concerned.

It very well could be a secondary infection.  How is her breathing, any complaints about the ears?

That said, I have seen relapses, and flu A can be particularly nasty (also bad for opening up the opportunity for secondary infection).  Get her checked out if she seems to have any trouble with breathing, drinking, eating, etc.

I have been told by our HCP that cycles like that are normal with a virus.  The fever will go down, but can spike back up again, and can even do that a few times.  How long has she been sick total?  Don't they say the flu can last 7-10 days?  Is she improved in general, and not worsening?  Sorry your DD is miserable.  We are dealing with some kind of congestion/fever/cold/flu/etc virus here too.

Often, when a child has flu, seems to get better for a day or two, and then suddenly runs a fever again, it's a sign of developing pneumonia. That's a really low fever, so if she looks okay, I might not worry too much. But if she's not looking well at all, or not eating and drinking, or having trouble breathing, or coughing a lot, I think I would be speaking to a health care provider. That's how it was last winter, for both DD2 and DH, when they had flu, and both turned out to have developed a secondary bacterial pneumonia.
