13 month old vomiting a lot

After picking my 13 month old, Zion from the gym childcare yesterday at noon, her eye was red and irritated and one side of her face is rashy. After 3 hours that went away and then she started throwing up. The only time she kept anything down (breastmilk even) was overnight. This morning she was alert and happy for a fw hours but then started throwing up again. She is now lethargic and very irritable. She is napping on and off on me. I tried pedialyte but she threw that up and now refuses it. She nurses some but is throwing up more of t I think. Should I take her to the dr after a certain amount of time vomiting? I'm nervous about her getting dehydrated.

It sounds like she's picked up a virus. Lots of kiddos have their first bout of rotavirus at about this age. It can hang on for awhile-- it's not uncommon for the vomiting to hang on for three days, and there may be diarrhea afterward that can last as long as two weeks.

The only good reason to see a doctor about a GI virus is if you suspect dehydration-- you'd go to a hospital, in that case, to ask for intravenous rehydration. With a breastfeeding baby, it's right to just keep nursing, even if most of it comes back up. Baby actually hangs on to more than you think, even if it looks like most of it came back up, especially if it's held down for more than a few minutes. Then you watch-- if baby is dehydrated, you'll notice decreased urine output. That's usually the sign I look for, although there are others. The first thing our doc asks if we call about vomiting or diarrhea is if the child has peed in the last four hours or so.

Of course you'd also call your doctor or go to the ER if you see anything alarming-- a few things that come to mind are more than just a little blood in the vomit, bright green vomit, or a child who's so lethargic that she won't wake up and take notice even if you shake her and call her name loudly.

If she's sleepy, that's good-- lots of sleep will promote healing. I hope she feels better soon, poor thing.

Since she was with people who are not her regular caregivers, and given the red eye, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, I would be concerned that she may have been shaken. I am probably wrong, as these could be symptoms of many things, but I would definitely see a doctor asap, just to make sure that everything is ok.

No, no, we are very confident in these caregivers. Plus we can see them on a tv the whole time. The lethargy is caused by throwing up. She is doing better tonight I thin it is a virus.

I would watch out for signs of dehydration and in that case take her in, as your child might need fluids. And just keep offering her drinks and fluids, usually a bit stays down anyways, and it is easier on the esophagus.

She hasn't thrown up since about 4pm yesterday. I'm keeping her on breastmilk and pedialyte only today and she is not happy about that! she's begging for food. but i want to give her tummy at least 1 day before starting bland food.

Zion's been up and crying on and off for hours. It's 3:15AM. She'll settle down for a few minutes in our arms, our bed, or her crib, then cry more. She doesn't want to nurse (she's not wanted to drink or eat much today at all). I gave her some acetaminophen about 25 minutes ago. I just don't know what we should do.

I hope she's OK now. Let us know how she's been when you have a chance.

My 15m is currently having the same thing. He's been throwing up for over 24 hours now and we were very worried about dehydration. We found this helpful: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t083300.asp

As long as she is still having any wet diapers, has tears, has a wet mouth (put your finger inside), she isn't seriously dehydrated and it is most likely a virus that will pass on its own.  You can try giving some probiotics to help her stomach and guts repair themselves.

If she really will not stop crying please take her to the Dr just to rule our anything more serious like meningitus or appendicitus.
