Getting thirsty...or the lack thereof...

Has anyone here had problems with not getting thirsty?  Because I never get thirsty.  It just does not occur to me to drink anything.  Every once in a while I will see my teas lying around and decide I want a cup, but it's not because I am thirsty.  I just want the taste of the tea.  Often my husband will ask me at night what all I have had to drink during the day and it's the half glass of water I had when I brushed my teeth.

I have been trying to lose 6-7 kilos (sorry, been out of the US too long) since I had to stop breastfeeding my daughter in January.  I exercise, I attempt at eating right (and have been failing miserably, to be truthful...don't get hungry much either now that I think about it...)  Could all this be related?  A doctor recently suggested that my ADD might be playing a role, that I am just too involved with the buzziness in my head that I completely and utterly forget to eat or drink.  I have trouble believing that, although if there are any other ADD mamas out there that agree, by all means let me know...and how you get around this issue!!

For the record, my ADD was diagnosed four years ago when I was thirty, although from my history my therapists at the time were convinced I have had it since childhood (and that there were glaring, obvious indicators of this fact that should have been picked up, but alas, that is a rant for another day smile.gif)...don't know if that helps any...

Anyway, if anyone could share some insight, or even suggest work-arounds for this I would be eternally grateful!

I also don't feel thirst strongly the same way I feel hunger. I'm pregnant now and want to make sure I'm getting enough fluids so the ways I make sure I am drinking enough is to schedule drinks in like a meal, I drink a big glass of something at each of the mealtimes plus at each snacktime. I also have found that water doesn't do it for me and I don't drink enough fluids if I just drink water, so I've done a variety of lime/lemon/orange-ades, chilled teas, juice mixed with bubble water, etc...I schedule the drinks I make in on my meal planning calendar, so I always have something chilled in the fridge. I am in the southern hemisphere too, so the heat is starting and it's even more important to get enough fluids.

When I don't get thirsty, it's a clue that I haven't been consuming enough salt.  Sometimes I even put a small pinch of salt into my water glass, it tastes better.  And once I remember to salt things more for a while, I notice that need less salt and still remember to drink, and things taste right with the lower level of salt (til I forget and restart the cycle again eyesroll.gif).

Even though you dont get thirsty it would be good to drink some water as much as you can to have enough fluid in your system so you dont get dehydrated.

I too almost never feel thirsty and know I am chronically dehydrated. I also hate the taste of plain water (weird I know) so that doesn't help the situation.  I've actually made it my new years resolution for the past 3 years to drink more water, so far this year I'm sticking to it.  I bought a 2 liter pitcher and at the beginning of the week sliced up lemons, cucumbers, lemongrass and ginger.  I put them in little containers and each night I fill the pitcher with water and add those ingredients in. I also throw in a few mint leaves too.  It 'brews' overnight and I work off it all day - it tastes really good.  I replace and refill nightly.  Since you forget to drink or eat it might help to wear a special bracelet or something that reminds you to drink.  Good luck!
