Good Midwives in Dayton, Ohio

I was wondering if there was anyone (preferably multiple people) from Dayton, Ohio that knew of a really good midwife(s)? I have a 16 month old son that was born at the hospital. To be honest it wasn't a very good experience. I was overdosed on petocin and had half hour long contractions, had terrible back labor that I was told later could have possibly prevented if someone had helped me with positioning a little, and had a pretty long labor that ended as soon as I happened to remember that maybe it would help if I got on my hands and knees. To top it all off I barely got to hold my son after he was born because they said he was breathing to fast. (I still wonder if that would have went away with a little skin to skin time.) Anyway, they whisked him off to the nursery and wouldn't let me have him for hours. Even to feed him - they were afraid he might aspirate. He was in intensive care for two days for a nonexistent problem just because they wanted to be 'safe'. All that said I still feel nervous about a home birth, but would really like to research the options. First - so that maybe I'll have a little more say in what happens and get a little more one on one interaction. Second - to see how much cheaper it might be. Another reason I'm nervous is that a couple of my friends have had midwives and the one always ends up in the hospital anyway and neither of them seem to have had really good experiences. Reading success stories on this site has given me the courage to at least look into the options and maybe give it a try. I would just like to have recommendations for midwives that people have had good experiences with. Where they felt cared for, looked after, listened to, and important to that person. Someone professional yet almost your friend. As a side note - I love my OB and would have a very hard time parting with her! You might want to post to the Finding Your Tribe section of this board.  There are good midwives in Dayton, but they can be hard to find.  Be sure to ask lots of questions, because some are more experienced/qualified than others.  You might contact your local Dar a Luz - I'm *sure* they can give you some good information about your options!

I am in search also for a great widwife/ doctor that is pro-natural. I want to have a waterbirth and I'm so scarred that I will get to the hospital and then have my personal wishes denied. A couple of doctors/ cmns I have read about are through the Women's Health Specialists and Midwives of Dayton.

There are two OB groups that will allow water birth at Miami Valley Hospital and one at Good Sam..

1) Dr. Guy (along with Midwifes).

2) Dr. Horlocher and Dr. Woods.

3) Lifestages (Good Samaritan Hospital)

Any of the other groups that use Family Beginnings you run the risk of whomever is on call only allowing you to labor in the tub.  Also, if you get risked out of Family Beginnings there is a chance you wont get a waterbirth, as there are not true tubs but inflatable pools and they may have used the supply up.  Rumor has it though they were looking at keeping them for the non Family Begginings Births, but I am not sure how this process is going.

You also have the option of Good Sam Hospital as well.  They have birthing tubs in the room and most of all the docs (and midwifes) at Lifestages will allow for Waterbirth.  Good Sam is a smaller unit and this last birth I had there was a totally different experience than my first birth there.

Kettering, Sycamore, Southview and I believe Greene Memorial do not do waterbirths.  Although Greene did them when they had the Midwife group out there, I am not sure they are still doing them.

I too am looking into home births and midwives in the Dayton area as our baby is due in April. Though I've found a lot of information (including in your post and responses--thanks, btw!), I plan on getting in touch and finding out more info. Do you know, or anyone else know if this is covered by insurance at all?

Most homebirths are not covered by insurance in the state of Ohio.  Most insurance companies cover hospital births done by CNM's.

I heard that the Family Beginnings center in Dayton is nice. I haven't been there. I looked up Dr. Frey, she seemed very natural leaning.

Family Beginnings is very nice.  I have no clue who Dr. Frey is.

The main disadvantage to FB is that you HAVE to take all the tests (ie GTT, GBS, etc).  If those results are not in your file by the time you hit about 37 weeks they will decline you.
