fabric softener for diapers?

i have a bunch of used diapers - mostly cotton flannel fitteds. i know you can't use regular fabric softener with diapers because it'll make them repel. but i was touching them today and they feel a little rough, not soft.. is there anything i can do about this?

i've stripped them in super hot water with oxyclean. i have hard water, so after i did that i bought some calgon (and haven't used it yet). i'm not sure if the texture is just because they're well used, or if it's because of my hard water, or something else. but i was hoping someone would have an idea of how to make the fabric softer and more comfortable against the skin.

what should i try?

Oxyclean will make them feel more rough than average, so they will soften up a bit once washed normally.  I personally wouldn't worry about it.  Rough diapers work just fine on my babe at least.  You want really rough...line dry the suckers lol!

LOL.. yeah that'll make them "crunchy" all right!

I've been hearing good things about using wool dryer balls in lieu of fabric softeners, so I decided to make some. They're felting in the washer right now. I will let you know my results as soon as I get a load done with them.

You'll want to google this to learn more, but E-cover fabric softener is apparently CD safe. You can get it online or at Whole Foods.
