Moving to Berlin

Thread Starter

We're moving to Berlin in September. DD will be 20 months old. We were hoping for a 3 room apartment, somewhere well connected to public transportation, but not too loud and crazy, and not too expensive. Any thoughts on areas?

Any other things to be aware of when moving? I've traveled pretty widely (India, Iran, Egypt) and spent time in London and Paris, but never been to Germany. We've also lived in San Fran, LA, New York and Boston, but never with DD...

I just moved to Berlin on the 6th, and I would suggest Prenzlauerberg as THE baby-crazy neighborhood!  :)  All the kindercafes, stores, and people with babies/kids are there!  :)  I mean, of course, not ALL of them, but it's certainly the most fun to be in with kids.  That said, I live in Schöneberg, where the in-laws are minutes away.  It is, in my opinion, less crazy than, say, Kreuzberg or Neukölln, where I loved to be BC (before child!).

Look me up on my regular email if you wanna meet up sometime:  christinaderocher@gmail.com.  I'm making my way through kindercafes, looking at Waldorf schools and always in search of neat, natural toys.  If that sounds like a good time to you, with my 9 mo old dd in tow, give a shout out!  I'd love to swap stories re: San Francisco, too!

Thanks! We were going to get a temporary place in Prenzlauerberg but balked at the last minute because it would have been a long commute to where I am going a postdoc (in Dahlem where I have to be 3 days a week and I didn't want to tack on up to 2 hours a day of commute time). DH is staying home those days with DD, but she has lots of food sensitivities and so is still pretty heavily breastfed. Another friend suggested Schöneberg because it is way closer to where I'll be working and we are looking there now. Good to know it's kid friendly... I'll be in touch when we get there!

Well, look forward to meeting you, and gute Reise (safe travels)!

Warmly,
