My due date buddy CoralJean had a successful HBAC on December 22 and gave birth to a little boy! She sent the name but I just emerged from my bed for the first time today and left my cell w/ text message at the bed, so I'll have to let her update that. :-)
I got her text message as I was nursing a 30 minute old baby of my own. :-)
I don't think I've ever been so fearful during a birth but my husband has never been so confident, and he helped me through it beautifully. I had my main midwife with two apprentices, as well as a dear friend who is just getting into a midwife apprenticeship and is also 23 weeks pregnant with her eighth child. The entire birth team was awesome...we had Christmas music playing over Pandora.com, a cinnamon-bayberry scent in the bedroom (a.k.a. birth suite), and four midwives sitting around the dining room table, drinking tea, knitting, and chatting quietly while my husband and I wandered around the house making our way through the labor. Someone popped in every now and then to check the baby's heartbeat or see if we needed anything but otherwise we were left alone, which was nice. At 2:30 I looked at the camera and said in desperation to my husband, "If this labor is going to be as long as my average labor, I still have two hours to go!" At that, I decided to lay down and rest, and after a nice strong contraction, my water broke and the midwives made their way in. I felt like the pushing phase was lasting forever and was convinced that my pushes were not effective, but before I knew it, I could feel her head bearing down and I was pushing her out. She was born at 3:05pm on December 23 as Angels We Have Heard On High played in the background. She nursed right away and wouldn't stop! We started to wonder if her weight would be accurate when we weighed her because she was scarfing down so much colostrum. :-) Eventually she stopped nursing and then weighed in at 9lbs, 8oz, then started nursing again and didn't let go for 45 minutes!
And here she is...Clare Anastasia!
