Other locations for HB

Would anyone HB anywhere other than your home? I know not all homes are suitable, and sometimes you just want an amazing location.

Im asking because I have an amazing spanish style ocean front house, and the second floor screams for someone to HB in it, by the light of a full moon or sunset- huge bathroom with monster shower, giant room with beautiful fireplace, terrace with beach access just out the sliding glass doors that make up the whole front of the room, but private because there are no windows on the sides and its still several stories up off the beach. it's very nice, 20 ft wood ceilings and all. You could have a birthing pool on the terrace overlooking the water, very relaxing, as it's nice and quiet because it's a private beach. No limit on how much time you could spend there either, unlike a hotel or hospital.

I'm 12 miles south of San Diego in Mexico, so for those in So Cal that want to birth by the ocean but can't afford it in CA, or want medical back up that's good and affordable and available 24/7 without hassles, it would be a super cool location. You could bring our own USA based MW, have a traditional Mexican midwife, or hire a doc that will do exactly what YOU want, to stay outside if you want all night and day, for a few hundred bucks. You could even hire an ambulance to sit near by if you were paranoid, lol.Things you cant have in the US without money or insurance, and never with so little hassle. You could have an amazing experience with great practitioners in Mexico, if you are open to it.

personally, I think it would be nice. And your baby could have dual citizenship. It's in a safe neighborhood too. every time I go down to that terrace (not a lot, the house is huge and I use the other floor/terrace most) I think someone would LOVE to use this room, it seems like such a waste NOT to share it.

do you think it would be cool or is HB only for YOUR home??????

This is theoretical right now, and even if I did it, it wouldn't be a business, just the experience of sharing something so unique.

I once birthed at a friend's house, and it was great.  We were living very primitive at the time, no running water and I really love laboring in water.  She was closer to the local hospital, AND had a huge tub...both very attractive to me!  Now, I am also considering letting families birth in my home (not the old one w/no running water!), if they want a hb but feel they are too far from a good hospital.  My home is nowhere near as yummy as yours sounds, but it has the right features (for privacy, more than one bathroom, other) and is just 2min from a good hospital even though we're in the country.

Anyway--I also know of other fams who chose to have their homebirth 'elsewhere', for various reasons such as those you name and more.  I say, go for it--offer it out there.  If you don't need it to be a business, you could still probably charge a nominal fee to cover your costs of water, electric, any amenities such as food, clean up, whatever.  That is my idea anyway--don't want it to be a moneymaker per se, just so long as it doesn't cost me anything to do it.

As much as I love the idea of home birthing, I have never felt driven to birth in my own home - my AC is often unreliable and I've been due in the summer with both pregnancies.  I wanted to have my babies in a facility with functional climate control.  Among other things.

But I once stayed at a b&b that I thought would have been awesome to give birth at, and your 2nd floor sounds nicer.  I think there's a market for privacy, pampering, and a trusted care provider nearby.  What's the wait like to get across the border near you?

I think I'd almost rather NOT birth in my own home if I had a nice comfortable safe place to do it that was NEAR to my home.  I kinda feel stressed to keep my house super clean since I dont know when the MWs will be coming over.  It's a little much to keep on top of 9 months prego with a dog and a toddler and a husband.  If a place like yours was within 15 or 20 mins of my own home, I would prefer it.

I definitely prefer my own home for birthing (but then again, I really love our home!) but I could see how some mothers would wish to be elsewhere in the throes of labor. For our first HB, I had fears about being too far away from the hospital and didn't want to be at home because of it, so we planned for a "HB" at a resort and spa right down the road from a good hospital. That birth never happened that way since I went into transition labor right away and we probably wouldn't have made it all the way to the resort. I opted for HB instead of car birthing. But now I am totally comfortable here and couldn't imagine being elsewhere.

What you have sounds dreamy! I am sure there are lots of preggos who would be interested in taking you up on that!

Too bad you are not in Texas!  ;)  I am wanting to find an alternative location for my birth that is near a hospital.  I am not even looking for fabulous... just something that will do the trick.  As for now the plan is a hotel.  From what I understand it is quite common to birth in hotels, but it is a bit odd to me still.

Personally, I would only want to birth at my home.  But, can I just say, from your description I'm dying to LIVE in your home -- lol.  Good grief, it sounds amazing!  orngbiggrin.gif
