Please help me figure this out for my son. He got sick on the 23rd with the usual sore throat, earache, and fever. The fever has subsided on its own. Now he's got a new symptom. He started having small red spots all over his tummy and back and some on the side of his face. They don't seem itchy (he has not itched them). They also don't seem to be raised or bumpy. I don't know if it's chickenpox. I am not sure what to do and tbh what scares me is that he's not even two yet if it is chickenpox and we have a six week old. :Please help me figure out what this is. He's hardly eating anything and he's barely drinking anything. On top of that everything is closed tomorrow. I'm really scared. TIA

Thanks Echoecho1528, is the rash contagious? And is your daughter immune to it now? Also how did you guys treat it? Sorry for bombarding you with questions, we are thinking about switching peds so we don't want to take him in. Plus with the exception of the E.R. everything would be close. Anyway thanks for answering. He normally sleeps through the night but so far our nights have been horrible.
i don't have experience with roseola or that type of rash - so I may not be the best person to answer.
Â
From what I have read/heard - the roseola rash comes after the fever when the child is feeling better.
Â
You mentioned he is still miserable and not eating/drinking. To me that sounds like his throat is still sore - maybe he has strep throat? The rash may possible be related to strep - I don't know much about it though.
Â
For me, with those symptoms I would be taking him in for a strep test - I know the E.R is a pain, but strep throat is awful :(
Â
I hope he feels better soon!

my son had roseola when he was 6 months. i dont know if his throat was sore (he obviously couldnt tell me), but he was miserable. he had a pretty high fever and almost exactly 72 hrs after the fever started he broke out with a rash all over his stomach back and face. the rash is flat and conected (the spots touch). by that point he was feeling ok, and the rash went away in 3 days.
Â
if he still has no fever i wouldnt suspect strep, but everyone is different. if he is still feeling horrible i would get him seen. from everything i know about roseola, by the time the rash hits the child should be feeling better.
Â
i hope he feels better! and i hope the little one stays healthy!...i have a new little guy too i know how scary it can be when the older ones are sick. just remember she is still somewhat protected from your antibodies, and if she is bf even more so!

Sounds like he has/had strep and now has Scarlet Fever (my son had it.) Â He will need antibiotics if that is what it is (scarlet fever, if left untreated, can cause heart problems.)
Â
Call your doc office. Â They must have some sort of on call nurse/doc that you can at least talk to over the phone.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I called his ped on call this morning and he basically told me from my description that it's roseola. After that he said that if my son is acting fine then he's not worried. He also said that chickenpox and other viral infections with rashes usually have a fever and this one the rash is after the fever. Anyway that was about it. I felt so rushed over the phone that I was intimidated to ask him any more questions. The ped on call also happens to be his ped. Anyway my son is feeling better today. However he had very high fever for two days accompanied with crying and whimpering and not eating and barely drinking anything. Yesterday the fever stopped but we noticed the spots. They're smooth and turn white when we press them. Since yesterday he's been drinking a little more fluids and is eating soft foods (still not solid ones that he's used to eating before). During his high fevers he had no seizures that we knew about. We don't know if he's had any while sleeping. Yesterday for most of the day he felt so miserable that unfortunately his Christmas wasn't a very good one. Now he's playing with some of his toys and he feels a lot better. I'm assuming he had a sore throat because he was hungry and wanted to eat but after the first bite he'd cry. He also doesn't speak yet (we're bilingual). I'm just glad he's better today despite of his rash.
Â
OTOH my lo has not gotten sick. It's true bf does wonders! I'm so thankful he's healthy and did not get this. That's why I want to do ebf with him. Thank you all again for your replies. I'm glad I can always come here when I need help. You all are wonderful, thanks again for easing my mind, I was really scared.Â

Sorry I forgot to mention that I did call the on call ped on the 23rd. The problem is that when this started I thought it was the flu or something like that and she didn't really seem that concerned about his high fever. The spots only appeared yesterday. Now that he's feeling better I'll be looking for a better ped for him (dh and I have had issues with his ped in the past). Thanks again for the tip in helping me out and it's true better be safe than sorry :)Â
