We're not Catholic anymore, and DS is too young.  If we were Catholic and he had been through the Rites, then I would allow him to choose.

I have an uncle with mental retardation, he has a very limited ability to speak.  He receives Communion whenever he goes to Mass.  He's now living with one of his sisters who is not Catholic, so I'm not certain how often he goes to Mass anymore.

(A little off-topic, wine can also be part of Pagan rituals, though the meaning is different.  Eating together in community seems to be sacred in every religious tradition I've necountered.  In that situation, I would still wait until he's at least 7 or 8 to have a sip.)

That is an interesting point.  Some Jewish rituals use wine as well.  For example, there are 4 glasses of wine in the Passover celebration.  I would be interested to hear from other faith traditions on when and how much wine they allow their children.
