New York hotels - recomendations for cheap but good sites or hotels?

It's been a few years since I was in NYC and I've never done it with kids (btw, is the subway stroller friendly? I've never had to do it with a kid).

DH needs to do some research at the public library and I have enough flyer points to get the rest of us there so we are thinking of all going. The thing is that all my usual cheap but nice hotels aren't really kid friendly (pod hotel bunk rooms).

Ideally it would be nice to spend under $200 a night (4 nights) and have breakfast included and if I am really dreaming for it to be a suite or something like that so we can put the kids down in a separate room. I'm dreaming, right? I'd settle for the first two, though.

It will be 2 adults, a 2 year old and an almost 1 year old. Fun, huh?

Not too many restrictions on location (thinking Manhattan only as i will be alone with 2 kids during the days) as long as there is easy access to subway and sidewalks, LOL. DH will be based at the Lincoln Center, but it need not be super close - we are all keen walkers and that's what I love about travelling.

We're very flexible about when we go but it would depend on flight availability.

ETA: but we must complete the trip before April, I believe

The Hotel Bellaclaire on the Upper West Side (West 77th...Lincoln Center's at W65th, so not too far) was nice when we stayed there earlier this year. Just a little over $100 a night I think and we got a free upgrade to a king. Breakfast wasn't includes, though. As far as the Subway goes, we've never done it with a stroller but lots of people do. It seems manageable. Hope you have a nice trip...we love NYC. Definitely check out the Children's Museum of Manhattan, also Upper West Side, if you're alone with the kids and looking for something to do. DS LOVED it there and we spent a couple hours just letting him run and play.
